The Foundation certificate in heating and hot water design is a course aimed at installers who have recently entered the industry or have little or no experience in the area of heating system design. The course will provide a good level of understanding for the design and specification of basic domestic heating systems, as well as size hot water storage cylinders.
This qualification can be gained for an additional £350 during either our 10 day plumbing course, 10 day level 1 plumbing course or as part of our 5 day advanced plumbing course (second week of the 10 day course). If you are a returning student to YTA and you have already completed the 5 day plumbing course then you will only require the 5 day advanced plumbing course.

Note: For option 3. The candidate must already have some experience in plumbing or already completed the 5 day plumbing course.
Be trained and assessed in the following areas:
- Comfort conditions and basic heating and hot water principles
- Basic system types
- Heat-loss calculations
- System design
- System specification and selection including emitters, pipe work, boilers and pump sizing
- Sizing and selection of hot water systems
While training covers pipe-sizing and pump-settings etc in theory, they are not part of the practical work. There are questions regarding these in the written assessment.
The course is based upon the CIBSE (The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) Heating Design Guide (DHDG) 2007 ISBN 1 903287 40 5
The course is also accepted by IDHEE (Institute of Domestic Heating & Environmental Engineers) as a unit credit and will save two days attendance on the full diploma course.
This industry recognised qualification is accredited by Logic Certification Ltd.
Pre-requisites: Learners should have basic knowledge in the installation of heating and hot water systems or have already completed the 5 day intensive plumbing course.
Duration: Taken over 5 days as part of options 1, 2 or 3 courses above.
Assessment method: Following completion of the training course candidates will be assessed using a design scenario task and multiple choice assessment.
Expiry: The Foundation Certificate in Basic Heating and Hot Water System Design & Specification will expire after 5 years.
