What You Will Learn

Measure, Set Out and Cut Worktops

Work through measuring and setting out before cutting worktops to size. Develop your approach to accuracy and understand how the separate pieces fit together in a corner installation.

Set Up and Use a Router and Worktop Jig

Learn how the router and jig work together, how to set up the equipment and how to approach the jointing task. You will receive demonstrations and practical guidance as you use the tools yourself.

Create a Mason’s Mitre Corner Joint

Use a router and worktop jig to form the mason’s mitre joint used to join kitchen worktops at a corner. Practise the technique and develop your understanding of what contributes to a neat finish.

Prepare Sink and Hob Openings

Work on setting out and cutting openings for a kitchen sink and hob. The practical course also includes fitting the sink into the prepared worktop opening.

Complete the Finishing Details

Learn how to approach the finishing touches after cutting and jointing the worktop, so the finished installation looks considered and complete.

Tools used during training include: a router, worktop jig, circular saw, jigsaw, square, clamps and other joinery tools. Instruction covers tool setup and techniques relevant to the worktop tasks.

Practise with Someone There to Guide You

You may know what you want the finished worktop to look like but feel less sure about setting up the router or making the first cut. Practical tuition gives you the opportunity to work through those questions while you have an instructor nearby.

YTA runs this course in small groups, giving you opportunities to ask questions, receive guidance and develop your technique. Our aim is to help you understand the work and build confidence through doing it.

Do I need to be a professional kitchen fitter?

No. The course can suit DIY learners and home renovators as well as existing tradespeople. If you are new to power tools, contact us about your experience so we can help you choose between the focused two-day course and the wider five-day programme.

Will I use the router and jig myself?

Yes. This is practical training. You will use the router and worktop jig as part of learning the corner-jointing technique, with instructor guidance.

Is the course accredited?

This course is Non-accredited with certificate of attendance. It focuses on developing practical worktop fitting skills you can continue to build through experience.

Does it cover sink plumbing or connecting a hob?

The worktop tasks cover preparing sink and hob openings and fitting the sink into the worktop. For training in pipework and plumbing connections, explore our 5 Day Plumbing Course. This worktop course does not provide a gas or electrical qualification.
