5 Day Advanced Plumbing Course (optional level 1 add-on)

Take the Next Step with Your Plumbing Skills

Once you have started building plumbing skills, you may find yourself wanting to go further. You have worked with pipework, fitted components and tested an installation. Now you want to understand the more involved systems and projects those skills can lead to.

YTA’s 5 Day Advanced Plumbing Course develops your training through domestic hot water storage, radiator systems, shower pumps, bathroom installations and drainage at our centre in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

This is the second week of both our 10 Day Intensive Plumbing Course and our 10 Day Level 1 Plumbing Course. You can book both weeks together through the ten-day course page, or arrange this advanced week as a continuation of your five-day foundation course.

Enjoying Your First Week? Book Your Second Week in the Office

Many students enjoy their first five days and decide they want to continue. You can book the advanced week while attending your 5 Day Plumbing Course.

Speak to the YTA team during your course. We will check available places and agree your advanced-week dates. You can then pay by cash or card in the office.

Bookings are subject to places being available. Tell us during your first week if you would also like the Level 1 option so we can arrange the qualification and assessment route with you.

Already booked a full ten-day course? Your advanced week is already included. You do not need to book or pay for it again.

Who Can Join the Advanced Plumbing Course?

This course builds on existing plumbing skills. It is suitable for:

  • Students completing YTA’s 5 Day Intensive Plumbing Course who want to continue into the second week.
  • Previous YTA foundation students returning to develop their skills further.
  • People with suitable existing plumbing experience, following a telephone skills check with our plumbing tutor.

Before joining, you should already understand how to:

  • Install a basic bathroom suite.
  • Fit, test and remove a radiator.
  • Work with copper and plastic pipe, including soldered, compression and push-fit connections.
  • Bend pipework.
  • Plumb a kitchen sink, including its waste connection.

If you have learned elsewhere or developed skills through work, call us before booking so the tutor can discuss your experience. The skills check helps establish whether the advanced training suits your starting point.

If you are starting from scratch, choose the 5 Day Intensive Plumbing Course or the full 10 Day Plumbing Course, which includes both foundation and advanced training.

What You Will Learn During Your Advanced Week

Your advanced week gives you time to bring individual plumbing skills together in more involved installations. You will work with components, pipework and testing while developing your understanding of how the systems operate.

Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems

  • Install a domestic hot water storage training system.
  • Fit an indirect cylinder.
  • Work with header tanks and gate valves.
  • Develop your understanding of stored hot water and gravity-fed supply arrangements.
  • Learn about different cylinders and read central heating plans.

10 day plumbing course

Radiators, Valves and Heating Fault Finding

  • Extend your radiator installation skills, including thermostatic radiator valves.
  • Work through central heating fault finding.
  • Use copper and plastic pipe with compression, end-feed and solder-ring fittings.
  • Develop your understanding of the pipework involved in changes to radiator installations.

Bathrooms, Shower Pumps and Mixer Showers

  • Complete a more involved bathroom installation.
  • Fit a shower pump and a thermostatic mixer shower.
  • Install traps, wastes and soil pipework.
  • Commission and test the installation under water pressure.

Guttering and Drainage

Cover rainwater guttering, hoppers and drainage, broadening your understanding of plumbing-related property work.

You will have opportunities to ask questions while working through these projects. Connecting the components and testing an installation helps turn separate techniques into a clearer understanding of the complete job.

Develop Skills for More of the Project

A bathroom replacement can involve much more than fitting a new suite. The work may include understanding the hot water supply, fitting a mixer shower, planning waste connections or altering pipework for a water-fed towel radiator.

The advanced week helps you build a broader understanding of those connections. For someone developing a plumbing or property maintenance service, that extra training can help you plan your next steps and identify the skills you want to keep strengthening through experience.

If you enjoyed the first week, continuing gives you the opportunity to build on that progress while your foundation skills are fresh. Speak to us about the next suitable available dates.

Complete the Ten-Day Route with an Ascentis Level 1 Qualification

If you have completed the five-day foundation course, adding this advanced week brings your plumbing training to ten days. You can also choose the Level 1 continuation option for an additional £400 including VAT.

For students working towards a business or career move, we recommend discussing Level 1 when arranging the second week. It adds formal assessment towards a named qualification to the practical training.

The qualification is the Ascentis Level 1 Award in Preparation for Plumbing Operations. You must complete its required training and assessment; booking the advanced week alone does not automatically award Level 1.

Ofqual-Regulated: A Qualification You Can Verify

Ascentis is an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation. Its Level 1 Award in Preparation for Plumbing Operations is an Ofqual-regulated qualification, number 600/6557/6.

The award has published assessment requirements and Ascentis quality assurance. Assessment includes a portfolio of evidence and a supervised practical task, giving successful learners a recognised record of assessed introductory plumbing skills.

Read Ascentis’s qualification details or check the official qualification register using 600/6557/6.

If an employer or insurer asks about your training, you can provide details of the award and assessment you have completed. Check their requirements for the particular work you intend to undertake.

Joining through an experience check? Discuss qualification eligibility separately with the team. Approval to attend advanced practical training does not by itself confirm that you have met the full Level 1 route requirements.

Practical Training at YTA in Bradford

  • 5 Day Plastering Course – learn practical plastering skills to complement property work.
  • 5 Day Carpentry and Joinery Course – add practical timber and fitting skills.

Our 4 Week Multi-Skill Course and 9 Week Ultimate Multi-Skill Course show how you can build a longer programme around your goals.

Ask About Our Current Free-Week Offer

Under our current offer, booking and paying for four eligible weeks gives you a fifth standard week worth £750 free of charge, at prices applying from October 2026. An eligible advanced week can be a way to develop a trade further after foundation training.

Ask YTA to check how your planned courses and bookings fit the offer terms. To arrange a free week, contact the team with your paid booking details, chosen course and preferred start date. YTA checks availability and books the bonus week manually. The £400 Level 1 addition is separate from the free-week offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same advanced week included in the ten-day course?

Yes. It is the second week of both the 10 Day Intensive Plumbing Course and the 10 Day Level 1 Plumbing Course. If you have already booked either full ten-day option, this week is included in your booking.

Can I book it while I am attending the five-day course?

Yes. Speak to the team during your first week. We can check available places and arrange your continuation. You can pay by cash or card in the office. Dates are subject to availability.

Do I have to attend the following week?

Speak to YTA about suitable available dates. We will confirm when the advanced week can be taken, with your foundation training completed first.

Can I attend if I learned plumbing elsewhere?

You may be able to join if you have suitable foundation skills. Call for a telephone skills check with our plumbing tutor before booking. Tell us separately if you want to discuss the Level 1 route.

How much does the Level 1 continuation cost?

For advanced weeks starting from October 2026, the additional week with the Level 1 option costs £1,150 including VAT: £750 for the advanced training plus £400 for the qualification route. This is for foundation students continuing onto the full ten-day Level 1 route, with the first week paid separately. Successful assessment is required.

I know City & Guilds. Is Ascentis recognised?

Yes. Ascentis is an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation, and this plumbing award is an Ofqual-regulated Level 1 qualification. When comparing courses, consider the exact qualification, level, practical content and assessment. Qualifications at the same level can have different content and purposes.

What certificate do I receive without the Level 1 option?

The advanced practical course is non-accredited with certificate of attendance.
