Learn to Plaster in Your Own Training Bay

There is real satisfaction in seeing a wall you have prepared and plastered yourself. Whether you want to improve your home, handle more of your property work or explore a practical trade, learning the skills gives you a place to start.

YTA’s 5 Day Intensive Plastering Course puts you in the workshop with tools, materials and an instructor to guide you. You will work in your own full-height training bay, developing practical skills in preparation, plasterboarding, wall and ceiling plastering, and repairs.

No previous plastering experience is needed. Give yourself a full week to learn the techniques, ask questions and practise at our training centre in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Your own training bay. No more than six plastering students per instructor. A practical setting where you can work through the tasks and get guidance as you learn.

Who Is the Five-Day Course For?

• Homeowners and DIY learners: develop skills for repairs and improvements to your own rooms.
• Landlords and property renovators: understand more of the preparation, plastering and making-good involved in your projects.
• Existing tradespeople: build skills that complement plumbing, tiling, carpentry or kitchen fitting.
• Career changers: take a practical first step into plastering and discover how you want to develop further.

You do not need to arrive knowing how to hold a plastering trowel or which plaster to choose. Your instructor will introduce the tools and working methods as you progress through the course.

Space to Practise the Work Yourself

Your individual training bay has full-height walls, a ceiling, a window opening and different backgrounds, including plasterboard, blockwork and previously plastered surfaces.

You can follow your own work through preparation, application and finishing. That helps you understand how the stages fit together and gives your instructor the opportunity to guide you on the work you are doing.

What You Will Learn

Prepare Walls and Ceilings

Learn how different backgrounds affect the job, which board and plaster to use, and how to prepare before you begin. The course introduces plastering tools, health and safety and practical working methods.

Fix Plasterboard and Set Beads

Work on fixing plasterboard to walls and ceilings, using dot-and-dab techniques on blockwork and setting beads for edges and corners. Good preparation gives you a sound starting point for the plastering that follows.

Skim Walls and Existing Plaster

Practise applying and finishing plaster on plasterboard and over existing plastered surfaces. Work on your handling and technique, with guidance as you learn how the material behaves.

Plaster Ceilings

Develop your approach to overhead work in your own bay. Ceiling training gives you the opportunity to practise a task that can feel unfamiliar at first, with an instructor there to explain and guide you.

Repair Plasterwork and Make Good

Work on wall and ceiling repairs, backing plasters, bonding and skimming. Practise feathering repairs into surrounding surfaces so you can understand how to approach damaged plasterwork.

Take-home reference information is included. Technical notes and practical guides give you something to refer back to as you continue developing your skills after the course.

A Useful First Step for Your Home or Working Life

Your goal might be to repair a room at home, take a more active role in a renovation or add plastering skills to work you already do. You may simply want to find out whether this is a trade you would enjoy developing.

Five days gives you a focused practical foundation. Continue building experience after training and choose projects that match your ability as your skills develop.

If you are thinking about offering services, the course also includes discussion of measuring and quoting, basic business start-up and marketing. You can ask questions about your next steps while working on the practical skills.

Choose Five Days or Build Towards Ten

Choose this five-day course for a practical introduction to preparation, skimming, ceilings and repairs. It is also the first week of both our ten-day plastering programmes.

If you already know that you want more training time, the longer courses let you build on that foundation through whole-room projects, more challenging techniques and rendering.

These prices apply to starts from October 2026. If you book either full ten-day programme, the first five days are already included.

Want to start with five days and discuss continuing? Speak to the YTA team about the next stage, available dates and booking arrangements. For Level 1, you will need to complete the full ten-day route and its assessment requirements.

Include Plastering in Our Five-Weeks-for-Four Offer

This course can count as one of the four paid weeks needed for our current offer. Book and pay in full for four eligible weeks and receive a fifth standard week worth £750 free.

Four standard five-day courses at £750 each cost £3,000 including VAT. With the free standard week, you receive 25 training days instead of 20, saving £750 against the usual £3,750 combined price.

Alongside plastering, you could choose five-day plumbing, five-day tiling and five-day carpentry and joinery. Discuss a suitable bonus week with YTA, including advanced training where you have the necessary foundation skills.

How to Book and Arrange the Free Week

1. Choose and pay for four eligible weeks online. Use the available dates at the bottom of the individual course pages, check that your dates do not overlap and pay in full.
2. Leave the free week out of your cart.
3. Email or call YTA when you book, or immediately after paying. Give your name, telephone number, paid booking details, chosen free course and preferred available start date.
4. YTA checks availability, manually books your bonus week and confirms it with you. The free week is not automatically reserved at checkout.

If you choose 5 Day Kitchen Fitting as the bonus week, the offer covers £750 of its £825 price. The team arranges the remaining £75 supplement.

Before You Arrive

Bring steel toe-capped boots and old work clothes that you do not mind getting plaster on. A change of clothes or a suitable protective oversuit can be useful for ceiling work. Tools and equipment are supplied for use during training.

Centre opening hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.

Five-Day Plastering Course Questions

Can I attend with no plastering experience?

Yes. This course welcomes complete beginners. Your instructor will introduce the tools, materials and techniques as you work through the training.

Will I have my own bay?

Yes. You work in your own full-height plastering bay, with walls, a ceiling and different surfaces to practise on. There are no more than six plastering students per instructor.

Does the course include ceiling plastering and repairs?

Yes. Ceiling plastering, wall and ceiling repairs, skimming, plasterboarding and preparation are all part of the five-day course.

Will I receive a certificate?

This course is Non-accredited with certificate of attendance. Students wanting assessed Level 1 unit accreditation should consider the full ten-day Level 1 route.
