Plasterer Salary UK 2026: Compare Pay Offers and Day Rates

A plasterer’s salary and a self-employed day rate measure different things. If you are considering a career change, comparing a job offer or planning future self-employment, start by identifying what the advertised figure covers. This guide helps you compare paid hours, business costs and the practical skills behind the work.

A current salary reference for plasterers

As checked on 1 November 2026, the National Careers Service plasterer profile gives a career salary guide of £21,000 for a starter to £38,000 for an experienced plasterer. Its typical working-hours guide is 40 to 45 hours a week. These are career reference points, rather than a measured UK average for 2026 or a promise about a particular vacancy.

The service explains that its salary estimates are guidance and vary with factors including hours, employer, location and training status. Use the range to frame your research, then compare current vacancies in the area where you want to work.

Five questions to ask about a pay offer

  • What is the arrangement? Establish whether the figure is an employee’s gross salary, an hourly wage or a contractor’s charge.
  • Which hours are paid? Check the normal week, overtime arrangements and whether travel between jobs is included.
  • What work will you handle? A role preparing and skimming straightforward walls differs from one requiring independent repairs, ceilings or specialist finishes.
  • Who supplies what? Ask how tools, materials, transport and protective equipment are handled.
  • What are the wider terms? Compare leave, pension arrangements, continuity of work and the responsibilities that come with the role.

Write the answers beside each offer. A larger hourly figure can be less attractive if it involves substantially more unpaid time or personal costs. Equally, a role with supervision and varied practical work may help you develop skills you want to use later.

Why a day rate does not tell you annual earnings

For self-employed work, the amount invoiced is business turnover. Materials, transport, equipment and other business costs come out of that income. Measuring, quoting, collecting supplies, cleaning equipment and dealing with enquiries also take time, even when they are not billed separately.

A simple weekly illustration

The following figures are assumptions to show the calculation, not market rates or an earnings forecast. Imagine three customer days charged at £220 each, giving £660 of weekly turnover. If the business incurs £160 in costs that week, £500 remains before personal tax and other personal deductions. If the whole week takes 40 hours, including quoting, travel and administration, that is £12.50 per working hour at this stage of the calculation.

Changing the paid days, price, costs or total hours changes the result. Repeat the exercise for a quieter week and allow for time off when planning a year. This is more useful than treating five chargeable days every week as certain.

For an actual quote, state the work included: for example, which walls need preparation, whether boarding or repairs are included, how access will be arranged and who buys the materials. A clear scope helps both parties understand the price and reduces the chance that extra work is overlooked.

Build the skills that help you judge a job

Before focusing on speed, learn to assess the background, prepare it properly and produce a consistent finish. A wall that needs boarding and bead work involves a different sequence from over-skimming a suitable existing surface. Ceilings, repairs, openings and awkward access can also change the work required; one room-size estimate cannot cover every property.

During practice, record what you prepared, which stages needed help and where your finish improved. Discuss the next suitable task with an instructor or experienced colleague. This gives you concrete evidence of progress and helps you decide which work you can take on responsibly.

Choose a practical plastering course for your next step

YTA’s five-day plastering course costs £750 including VAT and welcomes beginners. You practise preparation, plasterboarding, beads, wall and ceiling plastering, and repairs in a training bay, with tools and equipment supplied for use during training. It is non-accredited with a certificate of attendance.

The standard ten-day plastering course costs £1,500 including VAT. It adds further practical work, including whole-room projects, arches and curves, blockwork plastering and K Rend. This standard route is also non-accredited with a certificate of attendance.

For assessed achievement, the ten-day Level 1 plastering option costs £1,900 including VAT, including the £400 assessment addition. Successful assessment leads to NOCN Cskills Level 1 unit accreditation in Skills for Plastering, worth six Level 1 credits. This records assessed unit achievement; a full plastering qualification or NVQ has additional requirements.

Choose five days for an introduction or ten days for more time to connect the techniques. Teaching runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. For ten-day bookings, check both training weeks and any gap shown in the booking. Use the current date tables on the course pages to check availability.

Training takes place at YTA Training, Unit 12a, Factory Street, Dudley Hill, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD4 9NW. If you are travelling from elsewhere, plan your journey to Bradford using the YTA travel information.

To discuss your experience, the tasks you want to learn and a suitable course date, contact the YTA team or call 01274 682199.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a plasterer earn in the UK?

The National Careers Service currently gives a career salary guide of £21,000 for a starter to £38,000 for an experienced plasterer. These are reference points for comparing roles, not a measured average for 2026. Check the hours, duties, location and employment terms of each vacancy.

Is a plasterer’s day rate the same as take-home pay?

No. A self-employed day rate is a charge to a customer. Business costs, time spent quoting and travelling, gaps between jobs and personal tax affect what remains. Compare business income over the whole working period rather than multiplying one day’s charge by every weekday.

How can I compare an annual salary with an hourly wage?

Check the contracted paid hours and how overtime is treated. Divide an annual salary by the relevant paid weeks and hours only as a comparison calculation. Ask about holidays, travel, tools and other terms before deciding whether two offers are equivalent.

Does a short plastering course guarantee a particular income?

No. Practical training gives you skills to develop through continued practice and experience. Earnings depend on the work you can complete reliably, available opportunities and the terms or prices you agree. Choose training for the tasks and assessed outcome you need.

What is the difference between YTA’s plastering course certificates?

YTA’s standard five-day and ten-day plastering courses are non-accredited with a certificate of attendance. The assessed ten-day option leads, on successful assessment, to NOCN Cskills Level 1 unit accreditation in Skills for Plastering, worth six credits. That unit achievement is separate from a full plastering qualification or an NVQ.

Where does YTA’s plastering training take place?

YTA’s practical plastering courses take place at Unit 12a, Factory Street, Dudley Hill, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD4 9NW. Students travelling from other areas attend the Bradford centre. Call 01274 682199 to discuss your goals, course dates and booking options.
