Build the Plastering Skills to Take Your Next Step
There is something satisfying about turning a rough room into a space with smooth walls and a neatly finished ceiling. Learning to do that yourself can open up new possibilities: improving your own properties, adding another service to your trade or working towards a business of your own.
YTA’s 10 Day Intensive Plastering Course gives you time to build your foundations, develop your technique and progress into more demanding practical work. You will train in your own full-height plastering bay at our centre in Bradford, West Yorkshire, with experienced instructors guiding you through the work.
No previous plastering experience is needed. Start with preparation, boarding and skimming, then build towards whole-room projects, repairs, curves and rendering. The second week gives you more opportunities to put the techniques together and understand how to approach a complete job.

Your Own Training Bay, with Room to Develop
You have your own plastering training bay throughout the course. With full-height walls, a ceiling, a window opening and different backgrounds to work on, you can develop your skills in a space that brings several parts of a plastering job together.
You will encounter plasterboard, blockwork and previously plastered surfaces. That variety helps you understand how preparation and technique change with the job in front of you.

Why Choose Ten Days of Plastering Training?
The five-day plastering course gives you the foundations. Ten days gives you the opportunity to build on them while the techniques are becoming familiar.
During the second week, you progress into plastering walls and ceilings as a complete project, working on more challenging shapes and backgrounds, and applying coloured render. You have further opportunities to ask questions, correct your approach and develop the consistency that comes with practice.
If you want to make plastering a serious part of your working life, the ten-day programme gives you a broader practical starting point. It can also suit a substantial renovation where you want to understand more of the work yourself.
Week One: Build Your Plastering Foundations
Your first week introduces the tools, materials and core techniques. You will work through preparation and practical plastering tasks with guidance as you develop your approach.
- Preparation and materials: understand different backgrounds, which plaster to use and how to prepare for the work.
- Boarding and beads: fix plasterboard, use dot-and-dab techniques on blockwork and set beads for edges and corners.
- Wall skimming: practise applying plaster to plasterboard and existing plastered surfaces.
- Ceiling plastering: work overhead and develop your handling and application technique.
- Repairs and making good: practise repairing plasterwork, bonding and skimming, and feathering repairs into surrounding surfaces.
- Working methods: learn about tool use, health and safety and the sequence of a plastering job.

Week Two: Bring the Skills Together
The second week develops your training through larger projects and more demanding techniques. You begin to connect preparation, application and finishing across a room.
Work on Walls and Ceilings as a Complete Project
Put your first week’s techniques together by tackling walls and ceilings as a full project. This helps you think about how to organise the work and maintain your approach across different surfaces.
Develop Repairs and Work on Different Backgrounds
Build on your repair and over-skimming skills. You will also learn the traditional bay-and-screed method of plastering onto blockwork, extending your experience beyond plasterboard backgrounds.

Practise Arches and Curves
Work on techniques for curved surfaces and arches. These may be on walls or ceilings, with the opportunity to cover both where time and progress allow.

Build Your Technique Through Further Practice
Use your training bay to continue developing your tool handling, application and finishing. Having more time with the work helps you recognise what needs adjusting and put your instructor’s feedback into practice.

Learn to Apply K Rend
Your training includes applying K Rend coloured render to blockwork and working towards a textured finish. This introduces you to a rendering technique alongside your internal plastering work.

Thinking About Offering Plastering Services?
If your goal is to work for yourself, learning the practical work is an important first step. You also need to think about which jobs suit your ability, how to measure and quote for them, and how to present your services to customers.
The course includes discussion of measuring and quoting using your training room, business start-up and marketing your services. You can ask questions about taking your training forward while developing your practical skills.
Use the course as a foundation, continue building experience and take on work that matches your competence. If you want a formal record of assessed skills alongside the training, consider the Level 1 option below.
Add Level 1 Unit Accreditation for £400
Our 10 Day Level 1 Accredited Plastering Course costs £1,900 including VAT
This adds the assessment route towards NOCN Cskills Level 1 unit accreditation in Skills for Plastering. Successful assessment provides a unit accreditation certificate and six Level 1 credits, giving you a formal record of your assessed achievement.
If you are investing in training for a business or employment goal, this can be a useful addition. The accreditation relates to the assessed Level 1 plastering skills; it is separate from an NVQ Level 2, which requires further experience and assessment.
To book with Level 1: use the dates and booking options on the Level 1 plastering course page. The booking options at the bottom of this page are for the non-accredited course.
If you prefer to decide after starting, you can discuss the £400 upgrade with YTA on your third training day. Speak to the team early in your first week so they can explain the assessment arrangements.
Why Choose YTA?
YTA has provided practical construction training since 2006. Your training combines experienced instruction, small groups and your own working bay, so you can practise, ask questions and develop your approach through the course.
Read YTA student reviews before you decide. If you would like to see the training centre first, contact us to arrange a visit and talk through your plans.
