Seasoned carpenters can gain access to site work with the help of our one-day EWPA

A lot of us associate New Years with entirely new beginnings – in other words, ditching whole aspects of how we live in favour of trying to start new and ‘healthier’ habits from scratch. But in some ways, it can often be a better idea to seek to build on our existing life and career strengths if we wish to succeed in a New Year – which brings us neatly onto the subject of our carpentry EWPA.

As one of the most trusted construction training centres in the UK here at YTA, we offer no shortage of courses for those wishing to learn a trade for the first time.

But the EWPA pathway – otherwise known as the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) – is something different. It is not a ‘training course’, but instead an assessment route, whereby those who already have a certain level of experience and knowhow in a particular trade can upgrade their qualifications to NVQ Level 2 in the space of a day.

Satisfying the requirements of the EWPA process enables those who undertake it to obtain the blue skilled worker CSCS card allowing them to gain access to site work.

So, what does the carpentry EWPA specifically cover?

As you’ll see when you browse the YTA website, it is possible to undertake an EWPA for wall and floor tiling, bricklaying, plastering or site carpentry, depending on the trade in which you have previous experience and expertise.

The carpentry EWPA – or the Cskills Awards NVQ Level 2 Carpentry Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction) QUA900, to provide its fuller name – is open to those with a minimum of five years’ joinery experience. If you take it on, it will involve you visiting our training centre in person, and your skills being evaluated by an NVQ assessor through a combination of professional discussion, witness testimonies, and a practical assessment.

The main units constituting the carpentry EWPA relate to compliance with workplace safety and efficient work practice requirements, and the movement and handling of resources. Your bid for the NVQ Level 2 qualification can be further supported by three optional units of your choice, the options covering such subjects as the installation of first fixing and second fixing components, and the maintenance of non-structural carpentry work.

If you fulfil all the essential requirements for the EWPA during your day or two at our premises, the assessor will inform you of this at the end of the day. In the event that you are successful, you can expect to receive your certificate within two weeks, so that you can then apply for your blue skilled worker CSCS card and get on-site.

Contact us now to learn more about any of our training courses or assessment routes

For some of you reading this, the New Year may be about committing to one of our fuller courses in a trade such as tiling, plumbing or plastering… or an EWPA might be a better match to your previous background and current needs and aspirations.

Regardless, we are available at YTA to advise and guide you to ensure you make the optimal choice for what you wish to get out of 2022. Please do not hesitate to call or email us today for further information from one of the UK’s leading construction training centres.

Establish strong foundations for your carpentry career by completing our Level 1 five-day course

All of the construction trades in which we provide training here at YTA are crucial to today’s economy, and carpentry is no different. The creation and installation of wooden structures, fittings and furniture is a skill that helps make life much more convenient for those who depend on such items in their day-to-day lives – in other words, practically everyone.

But not everyone can become a carpenter themselves, of course, this profession calling for individuals who possess remarkable attention to detail, the ability to work well with others, and skill in using their hands.

If, nonetheless, a carpentry career is something you have considered, one of our highly rated intensive carpentry courses might be of interest to you. In fact, even those who only have five days spare to join us at our West Yorkshire training centre, and who might not have any experience in carpentry at all, have the opportunity to potentially earn a unit certificate in this trade.

Specifically, we are referring to our Cskills Level 1 Unit Carpentry Course. This accredited five-day programme of training will see you trained and assessed in a single unit – the NOCN Cskills Level 1 Unit in Hanging A Door. If you then achieve this, you will be able to show it to possible future employers or customers as evidence of your competence in this vital trade. The course can also provide a strong platform for future carpentry training at NVQ Level 2.

What will you actually do over those five days’ carpentry training?

In the space of just five days, you will cover considerable ground in carpentry training. You will begin with learning about the correct use of the basic hand tools involved in carpentry and joinery, ranging from saws to chisels. You will then be tasked with creating a series of progressively difficult woodwork joints, to help you become more capable in marking, cutting and chiselling.

You will have the chance to put those skills to good use later in the course, when you will get to build a door frame with a half lap joint. This will be followed by the construction of a stud partition with doorway from scratch, and then the architrave and skirting phase, when you will learn how to mite a skirting board on internal and external angles.

In summary, then, this is an excellent course if you are looking to be trained in various aspects of carpentry and joinery over just five days. Please note, however, that we also offer a 10-day accredited Level 1 carpentry and joinery course covering the aforementioned and two more NOCN Cskills Level 1 Units, which will enable you to get to grips with more advanced carpentry and joinery techniques.

Enquire to us now to find out more about this popular route

Whatever the nature of your motivations may be for getting involved in carpentry and joinery, here at YTA, we would be pleased to answer any questions you might have about our intensive carpentry courses, not least so that we can direct you to the most appropriate training option.

Call 01274 682199 or 07400 922788 now, or email us for further information on how we could help you take the next big step forward in your career in carpentry or any of the other trades for which we offer accredited courses.

From novice status to a fledgling career in carpentry – it’s possible in 10 days

There are fewer longer-standing trades than joinery, and there’s also little doubting its potential long-term rewards for those who embark upon it as a career, with experienced carpenters able to command salaries of as much as £40,000. But if you’re serious about entering this varied trade yourself, what is the best first step you could take?

One course of action could be a quite literal one – our 10-day NOCN Cskills Level 1 Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery Course, which allows you to achieve no less than a full qualification. Provided that you pass the course, you could scarcely hope for a stronger foundation for your future carpentry career.

Five assessments leading to a complete qualification

There are no fewer than five units in which you will be trained and assessed when you enrol on this course. These are the NOCN Cskills Level 1 units in health and safety in construction trades, communicating effectively in construction trades, constructing woodwork joints, fitting architrave and skirting, and fitting ironmongery to an internal door.

With NOCN being the awarding body for construction NVQs, this is the name that you’ll want to have on your certificate when you’re seeking to demonstrate your competence in carpentry to prospective customers or employers.

It’s also important to underline that no prior experience in carpentry and joinery is needed in order to embark on this course. Our Certificate in Carpentry & Joinery courses, then, are very much for budding carpenters who want to rapidly travel a long distance in their new career.

What are the specific things you’ll learn about on this course?

You’ll be amazed by how far you can progress your carpentry skills and knowledge with us in just 10 days! Beginning with the basics of how to use the fundamental hand tools involved in carpentry, the course will then take you through marking, cutting and chiselling, followed by the more advanced tasks that will require you to develop and demonstrate these skills.

In the space of a mere 10 days, you’ll get to grips with such carpentry processes as building a stud partition wall with a doorway, hanging a door including the fitting of locks, the fitting of skirting and mouldings, scribing joints to fit mouldings and skirting, and so much more.

With all of this available for a highly attractive price at the UK’s most renowned centre for construction training and assessment, it’s no wonder that our Certificate in Carpentry & Joinery courses quickly become fully booked up.

So, we’d urge you to act now if you’re interested in this course as a route to giving your carpentry career serious lift-off in 2021! To book or to ask any questions you may have about this course before committing, please don’t hesitate to call 01274 682199 or 07400 922788 now. Alternatively, email info@ytatraining.com for further information and advice.

Student returns 9 years later!

It was so lovely to have Denise back in YTA with her son 9 years after her first course. Denise originally attended our tiling course back in 2011 and has returned to complete a few more courses with her son’s in August and September leaving us with a lovely review on Google.

I did my first tiling course here over 9 years ago. I loved it! But I came out of the trades industry for a few years. Having recently started my new business as a tiler I wanted extra experience with what I’ll probably come across.

My son and I attended the 5 day plumbing course. Fantastic for both of us.

I have since attended a 2 day floor tiling course.

The instructors make this such a fun and relaxed atmosphere whilst maintaining safety and professionalism.

I feel the course prices are extremely reasonable and can’t wait to attend the 5 day joinery course in January 2021!

All safety measures are adhered to!

I haven’t bothered looking at anywhere else for my courses as YTA has it all!

They even sell tools at competitive prices too!

Thank you Denise for such a lovely 5 star review. It’s always great to see returning students and hear how well you’ve been doing. Looking forward to another catch up when you return for the joinery & carpentry course. Graham

I'll be honest when I saw the advertisement and checked the place on google, I said another course to waste time, and contrary to having judged the place, the course was above my expectations, very practical, excellent teaching, I recommend 100 % five stars.

As an unskilled landlord I felt a little exposed due to the lack of plumbers out there doing small jobs, leaking sinks, new toilet inlets etc etc. I contacted YTA to bridge that gap a bit. After 5 days, I actually feel far more comfortable and I am actually going to tackle installing a bathroom. Very good, hands on training. Can be difficult to hear whats going on at times due to all trade training going on in the same room but I would definitely recommend them. I am actually going to do joinery, kitchen fitting and plastering too within the next 12 months.

Just finished the 5 day kitchen fitting course with Paul. I had very limited skills prior to this but have learnt loads and now feel totally competent to fully fit out my mums kitchen and utility room myself. Great course with very experienced tutor. Highly recommended. I'm going to do the plumbing course next. Thanks Paul and YTA.

Can't rate this place enough. I've done plumbing, plastering, and am about to finish a joinery course. The instructors are all very skilled in their respective trades and the class sizes are small enough that you have time to go at your own pace and really learn. All the instructors are very approachable and happy to answer questions, however stupid I thought they might sound. If you're considering a course here my advice is to do it. I started with virtually no practical skill at all and after each course I'm now confident that I can put these skills to good use in my house, and what I could produce by the end of each course is much better than what I've seen some tradesmen produce. You'll be pleasantly surprised by how much you'll learn at this place, even with no prior experience.

Finished my 10 day tiling course with Gary and it was superb.Considering I'd never laid a tile prior to starting the course and then to be tiling by 10am the morning is amazing and it's a credit to him, he has confidence in the people he's training even if they don't haha. Without thinking you just do it, he guides you along swimmingly.Gary, without saying it, recognises your pace and how confident or not you are and he goes with YOUR flow which I feel is correct.

I attended a 5 day plastering course .All the instructors are great and easy to get on with. Dave the plastering instructor is a top lad .Nothing to much trouble and really helpful.I’ve already started on my own house and the course definitely gave me the basics I needed to point me in the right direction.I would recommend Dave and all the staff to anyone thinking about having a go.I’m 61 served my time as a bricklayer straight from school but I wish I’d given plastering a shot years ago.Best thing I’ve done in a long time. Also ‘Bradford Digs’ great little place to stay.Cheers to all…Andy.
