Plastering is a trade that interests all kinds of people, for all kinds of reasons. Of course, not everyone who joins us here at YTA for one of our five-day or 10-day intensive plastering courses necessarily seeks to practise plastering as a trade at all – they may simply be enthusiastic DIYers. But others are existing tradespeople wishing to extend their skills, and some are complete beginners who wish to take the first step to a career as a professional plasterer.

Sure enough, if you wish to take on one of our intensive plastering courses, whether for five or 10 days, you don’t need to have any previous experience at all. However, it would be quite wrong to think that you couldn’t possibly learn much in such a short time-span!

After all, when you choose YTA, you’ll be able to get to grips with plastering in a large training bay of your very own, not needing to share with anyone. What’s more, as we only have five of these training bays, we only take on this many students for each running of the course, so you’ll be able to look forward to a high standard of teaching thanks to a low student to teacher/trainer ratio.

But what will you actually learn on a course with us?

As for the actual content of these intensive plastering courses, it’s fair to say that you’ll be covering some serious ground with us!

Even if you go for ‘just’ the five-day course, for instance, you’ll be able to board and prepare your training bay – or ‘room’ – before plastering a ceiling for the first time. This will be followed by plastering walls, even including a window to trim up to. You’ll then be taught how to over-skim previous work, repair plastering and ‘feather in’ – this being an important technique for larger walls.

Even more awaits you, however, if you enrol on our 10-day course. This will entail the course going into a second week, with the chance to plaster the full wall and ceilings in your training bay as a complete project, instead of the two of them being treated as separate tasks. For this, the traditional method of plastering onto block work (bay and screed) will be used, instead of board fixing (dot and dab).

You might not have thought that within just one or two work weeks, you could go from being a complete newcomer to the world of tiling, to someone with sufficient skills, information and confidence to actually begin tiling professionally. Yet, this is precisely what the five-day tiling intensive courses that we are presently offering here at YTA can make possible for you.

We run two five-day courses, in fact – the Intensive Wall and Floor Tiling Course and the Non-Accredited Advanced Tiling Course – that can be taken separately one after the other, or as a whole when you enrol on our 10-day Intensive ‘Ready for Anything’ Tiling Course.

Barely a week needed to become a capable tiler

Let’s start from the (very) beginning, with our 5-day Intensive Wall and Floor Tiling Course. This is the perfect route to take to a professional tiling career if you have never previously done tiling, but it’s also suitable for enthusiastic DIYers and other tradespeople who wish to become tilers.

Regardless, you can expect to cover a serious amount of territory over the five days of this course, starting on Monday with health and safety, followed by the preparation of surfaces and the cutting of tiles with a tile cutter, moving onto tiling a kitchen and grouting before the end of the day.

The course then continues on Tuesday with the polishing off of the previous day’s work and silicone sealing to complete the tiled kitchen. Students of the course will then set out and tile to and around windows, in addition to tiling down to the floor on a large area.

Over the final three days of the course, you will learn such tasks as marking and cutting tiles around obstacles, tiling a bathroom, drilling holes in tiles, full measuring and quoting, and preparing, setting out and tiling the bathroom floor.

But there’s so much more that you can train in…

As aforementioned, the above is merely a summary of what our beginners’ five-day intensive tiling course will teach you. It is just one of our tiling intensive courses, with the second five-day course encompassing such aspects as tiling with diamond inserts, wet rooms, tanking, plunge cutting and naturals, including cutting and sealing.

Finally, of course, there is our 10-day course that brings together both of these weeks.
