career planning

Start Your Tiling Business After an Intensive Course

An intensive tiling course can help you take the first step towards a tiling business. The useful question is what you can deliver consistently after training: preparing a suitable background, planning a layout, cutting neatly and finishing the work. Build your first service around those demonstrated skills, then expand as your experience grows.

Turn training into a practical first-job plan

Start with a small project you can repeat and inspect, such as a straightforward kitchen splashback. Measure the whole area, sketch the layout and mark sockets, corners and exposed edges. Check the background and the tile and adhesive instructions before deciding what the work involves.

Keep a practice record with photographs of the preparation, cuts, joints and finished edges. Note what took longer than expected and which tasks needed help. Describe training photographs honestly when showing them to potential customers.

Learn the skills you will need to quote

YTA’s five-day wall and floor tiling course welcomes complete beginners. Practical work covers kitchen and bathroom walls, window details, cuts around obstacles, grouting, silicone finishing and a bathroom floor. Measuring projects, calculating tile quantities and preparing a customer quotation are also included.

For starts from October 2026, the five-day course costs £750 including VAT. Tools and training materials are supplied for use during training. It runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD4 9NW, and is non-accredited with a certificate of attendance.

Write down the scope before setting a price

A useful quotation starts with the job itself. Record the tiled area, preparation, tile format, openings, trims and finishing details. Clarify who supplies tiles and other materials, whether old finishes must be removed, and how access and waste will be managed.

Allow for measuring visits, travel, collecting materials, cutting, cleaning and product drying times as well as fixing tiles. An awkward window or several socket cuts can make two equally sized walls very different jobs. Keep assumptions clear, and agree changes with the customer before carrying them out.

Choose a manageable range of work at the beginning. If you find damaged backgrounds or a specialist system you have not worked with, establish the appropriate next step before promising a price or completion date. A careful site assessment is part of delivering a reliable service.

Choose further training for the work you want

Compare the YTA tiling course options if you want more practice or advanced subjects. The standard ten-day route costs £1,500 including VAT for starts from October 2026 and is non-accredited with a certificate of attendance. Its second week covers subjects including wet rooms, tanking and natural stone.

The separate assessed ten-day route costs £1,900 including VAT. Successful assessment leads to NOCN Cskills Level 1 unit accreditation in Skills for Tiling, worth six credits. This is unit accreditation, rather than a full Level 1 qualification. NVQ Level 2 assessment is a separate route for suitably experienced workers.

Arrange your next step

Use the dates and booking options on the five-day course page, or contact YTA to discuss your plans. Call 01274 682199 and explain the projects you want to learn. If you are travelling, check the Bradford travel information before choosing dates.

After training, review one completed practice project against your quotation: did you allow enough time, understand the background and produce the finish you intended? Use that review to choose your next suitable project and the skills to practise next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide any support?

YTA Training focuses on practical, workshop-based instruction. Choose a course that matches the skills you want to develop, then use the training time to practise tasks and improve your technique. Course outcomes differ: an attendance certificate records participation, while an assessed route measures specified units. Neither is a promise of work, business success or experience.

Thinking About Becoming a Tiler?

Start by deciding whether you want to work for an employer, take domestic jobs or build towards self-employment. Each route involves different day-to-day responsibilities. An employed role may offer a team setting; self-employment also means organising quotations, customer communication and records. Before committing, consider how you will continue practising after training and which types of tiling work suit your current ability.

What qualifications and certifications do UK tilers need for domestic and commercial work?

There isn’t one universal tiling credential that establishes competence for every domestic or commercial job. Customers, employers and contracts can set different expectations. Practical course certificates, assessed unit accreditation and full qualifications describe different outcomes. For example, tiling unit accreditation is not a full Level 1 qualification. Check that any claim you make about training or assessment matches the exact award you achieved.

How much does an intensive tiling course cost in the UK, and what skills does it cover?

The course price depends on the specific course and whether it includes an assessed qualification route, so compare the exact course details before choosing. Intensive practical training can cover layout, fixing, tile cutting and finishing techniques. For example, check whether the course includes practice with both wall and floor tasks, and whether assessment is included or offered as a separate route.

What practical experience should a new tiler gain after an intensive course?

Build experience by practising different layouts, tile formats and room conditions before taking on demanding customer work. Keep a work log recording the surface, materials, cuts and finish, then review where your measurements or timing need improvement. Suitable supervised tasks can also show how preparation and customer requirements vary between projects. Take on work that matches your demonstrated ability.

How can a new tiling business find customers and build a portfolio?

Begin with clear examples of work you have completed, and state honestly whether each was training practice or a customer project. Photograph finished areas with permission, using consistent lighting and views that show edges and joints clearly. Share those examples through your business profile and personal network. Respond promptly to enquiries, explain the proposed work in plain terms, and ask permission before using customer images.

How much can a self-employed tiler charge per day or per square metre in the UK?

There is no standard daily or per-square-metre rate. Set your price based on the work, location, complexity, time, materials and business overheads, rather than floor area alone.
