YTA’s 2 Day Floor Tiling Course gives you focused practical training in floor preparation, setting out, cutting, laying and grouting. Work through a floor-tiling project with guidance, using the tools and materials yourself as you develop your skills.

Complete beginners are welcome. The course also suits people adding floor tiling to existing plumbing, kitchen-fitting or property-maintenance skills.

What You Will Learn

Floor Preparation and Self-Levelling

Understand what needs checking before tiles are laid. The course introduces common floor backgrounds, preparation methods and the purpose of self-levelling products, helping you recognise why the surface beneath the tiles matters.

• Assessing the condition and suitability of a floor.
• Identifying uneven areas and preparation needs.
• Understanding primers, self-levelling products and boarding principles.
• Considering movement and stability before tiling.

Setting Out and Planning the Cuts

Learn to plan the layout before applying adhesive. Work out a suitable starting point, consider the most visible areas and see how moving the layout affects the cuts around the room.

• Measuring the floor area and planning tile positions.
• Setting out straightforward and more involved floor shapes.
• Considering doorways, edges and room features.
• Avoiding unnecessarily narrow cuts where the layout allows.

Tile Cutting, Adhesives and Laying

Practise measuring, marking and cutting tiles, then develop your adhesive application and laying technique. Learn how tile choice affects the tools and materials you use, including the differences between common ceramic and porcelain floor tiles.

• Using manual and suitable electric cutting equipment under instruction.
• Producing straight, curved and shaped cuts around typical obstructions.
• Selecting suitable adhesives, trowels and spacing methods.
• Applying adhesive and understanding coverage.
• Positioning tiles and checking alignment, joints and levels as you work.

Grouting and Finishing the Floor

Learn about grout selection and application, clean the tiled surface and review the finish. You will also discuss the purpose of movement and perimeter joints as part of understanding how a tiled floor is completed.

The practical work includes tiling a floor area and working through cuts and obstacles. The exact project and order of tasks may vary with the training area and students attending.

An Introduction to Electric Under-Tile Heating

The course includes a basic overview of electric under-tile heating: where it sits within the floor construction, how it affects tiling preparation and why the heating elements need protecting during the work.

Electrical connection and testing are outside this course. The overview helps you understand the tiling work associated with a heated floor.

You will receive printed reference information covering the subjects taught, including supporting information on adhesives and under-tile heating.

Practise with Support at YTA

With no more than six tiling students per instructor, you have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance while working through your floor project. You can try the tools, adjust your layout and understand the reasons behind the techniques.

Floor Tiling Course Questions

Do I need any previous tiling experience?

No. Complete beginners are welcome. The course is also suitable for people who already work in another trade and want to develop floor-tiling skills.

Will I lay tiles myself?

Yes. You will work on a practical floor-tiling project, including setting out, laying tiles and working through typical cuts and obstructions, with instructor guidance.

Does the course cover self-levelling?

Yes. The use and purpose of self-levelling products are introduced as part of floor preparation, alongside checking the existing surface and understanding suitable preparation methods.

Does it include underfloor heating?

The course includes a basic overview of electric under-tile heating and printed reference information. It covers how heating relates to floor preparation and tiling. Electrical connection and testing are outside the course.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. This course is Non-accredited with certificate of attendance. For practical training with assessment, explore the full ten-day Level 1 tiling route.

What are the teaching and opening hours?

Course teaching is 9am to 4pm on each training day. The centre is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.
