A bathroom renovation becomes much more achievable when you understand how to plan the layout, make the awkward cuts and finish the work neatly. You may be improving your own home, renovating a property or adding tiling to your existing plumbing or bathroom-fitting skills.

YTA’s 3 Day Bathroom Tiling Course gives you practical training in preparation, setting out, cutting, drilling, mosaics, grouting and silicone finishing. Work around the baths, pipes and corners found in bathroom projects, with an instructor there to explain the techniques and guide your progress.

No previous tiling experience is required. You can start with the basics and develop your skills through hands-on practice.

Practical Bathroom Tiling Skills You Will Develop

Surface Preparation, Tile Choice and Setting Out

A balanced layout starts before the first tile is fixed. Learn how to assess the working surface, understand preparation and primers, and plan the tile positions around bathroom features.

• Recognising common bathroom backgrounds and preparation needs.
• Understanding how tile type affects cutting and fixing.
• Measuring the training area and establishing reference lines.
• Planning joints and cuts around baths, shower areas and sanitaryware.
• Choosing suitable adhesives and applying them with an appropriate trowel.

Cutting, Drilling and Working around Obstacles

Practise the cuts that make bathroom tiling more demanding than a clear, flat wall. Work on measuring and marking accurately, fitting tiles around pipework and keeping the layout consistent as you move around corners and fittings.

• Using a manual tile cutter and producing straight cuts.
• Making shaped cuts around bathroom features.
• Drilling holes for pipe positions.
• Tiling around bath edges, supply pipes and waste pipes.
• Maintaining spacing and alignment through the project.

Mosaics and an Introduction to Waterproofing

Learn how mosaic sheets, borders and simple features fit into a wider tile layout. The course also introduces simple bathroom waterproofing systems, including why moisture protection matters around joints, corners and pipe penetrations.

This gives you an introduction to preparation for standard bathroom projects. For advanced wet room tiling, sloping floors and more demanding layouts, explore the 10 Day Intensive Tiling Course, which includes the advanced week.

Grouting, Silicone and the Finished Appearance

Bring the project together by applying grout, cleaning the tiled surface and practising silicone finishing. You will see how consistent joints and careful finishing affect the appearance of the whole bathroom.

There is time to review your work, ask questions and discuss the skills you want to keep developing. The order of tasks may vary with the practical project and students attending.

Practise with Guidance Before Starting Your Project

The training area gives you space to try a technique, see the result and ask for help while the work is in front of you. With no more than six tiling students per instructor, you can receive guidance as you work through the project.

Bathroom Tiling Course Questions

Can I attend with no experience?

Yes. The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as people who already work in plumbing, bathroom fitting or property maintenance.

Will I practise cutting around baths and pipes?

Yes. The training includes measuring, cutting and drilling tiles around common bathroom obstacles, including bath edges, supply pipes and waste pipes.

Does it include mosaics and waterproofing?

Yes. You will be introduced to mosaic borders and features, plus simple bathroom waterproofing systems. Advanced wet room and sloping floor tiling are covered on the longer ten-day route.

What if I mainly want to learn floor tiling?

Choose the 2 Day Floor Tiling Course for focused floor training, or a longer intensive course for broader wall and floor practice. This three-day course centres on bathroom tiling and its practical training project.

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes. This course is Non-accredited with certificate of attendance. Students wanting practical training with assessment can choose the full ten-day Level 1 route.

Does this course include quoting and business start-up guidance?

This course focuses on practical bathroom tiling. Introductory measuring, quoting and business guidance are part of YTA’s longer intensive tiling courses.

Which days does the course run?

Courses can run Monday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Friday, depending on availability. Choose a listed start below and check the attendance dates. Contact YTA if you need help finding a suitable three-day arrangement.

What are the teaching and opening hours?

Course teaching is 9am to 4pm on each training day. The centre is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.
