Who Is the 5 Day Plumbing Course For?

No previous plumbing experience is required. We welcome beginners as well as people who already work in another trade and want to broaden their practical skills.

  • Homeowners and DIY enthusiasts who want to understand plumbing and develop skills for their own projects.
  • Property renovators, landlords and maintenance workers who want practical experience of common installations and repairs.
  • Tilers, plasterers, joiners and kitchen fitters who want to add plumbing skills to the work they already do.
  • People considering a career change or self-employment who want a focused first week of plumbing training.

You may arrive unsure of the tools or worried about making your first soldered joint. The workshop is the place to ask questions, practise and learn from the work in front of you.

How to Get Qualified as a Plumber Quickly: The Fast-Track UK Guide

What You Will Learn: Your Week at YTA

Your week builds from pipework fundamentals into bathroom, heating and kitchen projects. You will connect, test and troubleshoot your work, helping you understand why a connection succeeds and how to put a fault right.

Monday: Tools, Copper Pipe and Plumbing Connections

Start with 15mm and 22mm copper pipe, common fittings and plumbing tools. Practise preparing pipework, bending pipe, fitting isolation valves and making connections using compression and soldered fittings. These techniques provide the foundation for the installations that follow.

Tuesday: Plan and Plumb a Bathroom

Work through a standard bathroom installation, including a bath, basin, toilet, taps and wastes. Learn how first fix and second fix fit into the job, then use copper pipe, bends and soldered joints to create the installation. Test the pipework under water pressure and deal with any leaks you find.

Wednesday: Toilet Repairs, Fault Finding and Call-Out Work

Examine toilet cistern components and different flush mechanisms. Learn how to approach common flushing faults, identify replacement parts and repair valves. Discuss everyday plumbing call-outs, how to assess a job and the considerations involved in pricing the work.

Thursday: Radiators, Valves and Heating Pipework

Install a small two-radiator system using copper pipe and fittings. Practise filling, bleeding and checking the system, learn drain-down techniques, and work through common faults and valve replacement. Additional radiator work may be included where progress and time allow.

These are useful skills for bathroom work too, where a replacement project may involve moving or adding a water-fed towel radiator. You will develop an understanding of the associated pipework and testing as part of your wider plumbing training.

Friday: Kitchen Plumbing, Tap Repairs and Plastic Pipework

Plumb a kitchen sink with hot and cold supplies, wastes and traps, including a connection for a washing machine or dishwasher. Practise tap servicing, washer replacement, reseating and O-ring repairs, then add an outside tap to your completed pipework.

You will also be introduced to the plumbing arrangements for mixer and electric showers, then work with plastic push-fit pipe and fittings on a further small project. Shower coverage here concerns the plumbing side; electrical installation is outside this course.

Practical Skills You Can Keep Building On

A working installation gives you something concrete to take away from your training: an understanding of how you planned it, connected it and checked it. That experience can help you approach your next project with a clearer idea of the work involved.

If you are thinking about offering plumbing services, we also discuss quoting, call-outs, finding customers and business start-up considerations. The aim is to help you plan your next steps and build experience through work suited to your developing skills.

The five-day course provides a practical foundation for standard domestic plumbing tasks. More complex installations and systems are covered through our longer training options.

Learn in a Working Training Environment

YTA has provided construction training since 2006. Our plumbing courses combine small classes, practical training bays and experienced instruction, so you can spend your time working with tools and materials and asking questions as you learn.
