Why Choose the Level 1 Tiling Route?
When you invest in learning a trade, it helps to have a clear record of what you have achieved. This route gives you foundation and advanced practical training, together with the opportunity to demonstrate your skills against NOCN assessment requirements.
Successful completion gives you formal evidence of assessed achievement that you can discuss with prospective employers or customers as you build your experience.
The Level 1 route costs £400 more than the £1,500 standard ten-day course. The difference adds assessment towards unit accreditation within the ten-day programme.
What Is the NOCN Cskills Accreditation?
You work towards the Skills for Tiling unit at Level 1, worth six credits. Assessment uses two practical tasks and associated knowledge questions.
- Wall tiling: practical work involving decorative features.
- Floor tiling: practical work involving obstacles.
- Knowledge: questions supporting the practical skills and understanding covered by the unit.
Your instructor will explain the requirements and prepare you through the practical training. Accreditation is awarded after you successfully meet the assessment requirements.
An Awarding Organisation Regulated by Ofqual
NOCN is an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, in England. The Skills for Tiling unit has defined learning outcomes, assessment requirements, and internal and external quality assurance.
Your certificate records achievement of the six-credit unit. Full qualifications, such as a Level 1 Award or an NVQ, have additional requirements.

Who Is This Course For?
- Career changers who want practical training with assessed achievement.
- People working towards self-employment who want to develop tiling skills and learn about measuring and quoting.
- Plumbers, bathroom fitters and kitchen fitters who want to add tiling to their services.
- Property renovators and committed DIY learners who want more extensive training and formal assessment.
You can begin without previous tiling experience. The first week introduces the core techniques before the second week develops more demanding work and includes the Level 1 assessments.
Week One: Learn the Foundations of Wall and Floor Tiling
The foundation week is included in your booking. You will work through practical projects using tiling tools, tiles, adhesives and grouts, with guidance on preparation and finishing.
Kitchen Tiling and Setting Out
Begin with health and safety, preparing surfaces and planning a kitchen layout. Practise using manual and wet tile cutters, applying tiles, grouting and silicone finishing.
Develop your setting out around a window and across a larger wall area, working on the cuts and alignment needed to bring the layout together.
Bathroom Walls and Cutting Around Obstacles
Prepare, batten and set out a bathroom training area. Explore adhesives and grouts for different situations, then work on cuts around waste pipes, basin pedestals, corners and door profiles.
Continue around baths, bath ends and shower pipes, including drilling holes through tiles. The projects give you the opportunity to ask questions as you work through the details.
Floor Tiling, Measuring and Quoting
Prepare, set out and tile a bathroom floor. You will also practise measuring projects and preparing customer quotations, using the kitchen and bathroom training areas.
Complete your supporting tiling information and review the foundation work before progressing into the advanced week.
Week Two: Advanced Tiling and Level 1 Assessment
Your second week builds on the foundations through decorative work, specialist cutting and more involved layouts. You also undertake the practical assessments and associated knowledge questions required for the Skills for Tiling unit.
Decorative Features and Detailed Layouts
Work on diamond splashbacks and decorative inserts, developing the setting-out and cutting skills needed for a more detailed design.
Windows, Reveals and Finishing Details
Develop a layout around a full window, including its reveals and surrounding wall. Work through the corners, cuts and finishing details, with further advanced practice including mosaic techniques.
Wet Rooms, Natural Stone and Specialist Cuts
Cover wet room tiling, including sloping floor layouts and tanking preparation. Explore cutting and sealing natural stone, plunge cutting and diamond drilling around waste and supply pipes.
Work on a larger bathroom area and include a decorative feature, developing your approach to planning and finishing a more involved project.
Underfloor Heating and Floor Tiling
Work on laying underfloor heating within the floor project and tiling over it, focusing on preparation and the tiling stages. Review your work and discuss questions about techniques and future practice.
Your instructor will explain how the training projects and assessment tasks fit into the programme. The unit accreditation certificate follows successful completion of the assessment requirements.
Build Towards the Work You Want to Do
You may picture yourself completing a customer’s bathroom, offering tiling alongside another trade or gradually building a business around practical work you enjoy. This course gives you a structured starting point for those plans.
Alongside practical training, you can discuss measuring and quoting, business start-up, marketing, business cards and advertising. Supporting tiling information gives you a reference to take away.
Continue developing your experience after training, working on suitable projects and building the consistency and finish your customers will expect. As your experience grows, YTA can discuss NVQ Level 2 assessment options and the requirements for progressing.
Learn with Practical Support at YTA
