Carpentry NVQ

18th February 2024 By Graham Binns

Site Carpentry NVQ Level 2 For Experienced Carpenters Through EWPA Route at YTA

Carpentry is one of those professions that it seems will always be around – and why wouldn’t it be? After all, the furniture items such as cabinets, shelves, and drawers that carpenters measure, create, and repair will always be needed.

And if you have spent years as a carpenter yourself, you will be aware of how varied and rewarding a job it can be, beyond the monetary reward – which can be as high as £38,000 or more a year in the case of the most seasoned carpenters.

This, in turn, brings us neatly onto the subject of our Experienced Worker Practical Assessment route, also known as ‘EWPA’.

While we are pleased to make available a variety of carpentry and joinery courses here at YTA, the EWPA is not a course. It is, instead, an assessment process, which can take just one or two days, and enables the already-experienced carpenter to achieve an NVQ Level 2 qualification.

That qualification, in turn, would allow you to gain access to site work as a carpenter with the blue skilled worker CSCS card, so this fast-track assessment route can be well worth the time and money investment. The EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment) can be seen below.

Use your existing skills and knowledge to upgrade your qualifications as a carpenter

You will need to have at least five years’ carpentry or joinery experience in order to undergo this EWPA. If you do satisfy this requirement and reach out to us about the EWPA, we will arrange a call with our NVQ carpentry assessor, who will complete a ‘skills scan’ with you to assess whether you have the necessary experience and knowledge of the NVQ units.

And what are those NVQ units? Well, in the case of this site carpentry NVQ, there are three main units, covering the crucial subjects of general workplace safety, efficient work practices, and the movement and handling of resources.

Various optional units are also available, and which could help you further strengthen your chances of passing the EWPA and achieving the NVQ qualification. These optional units encompass important aspects of the trade such as the installation of first fixing and second fixing components, the erection of structural carcassing components, and the maintenance of non-structural carpentry work.

If you do decide to do the EWPA, you will need to arrange a date at our Yorkshire training centre. Two weeks prior to that date, pre-printed witness testimonies will be sent to you, and you will need to get them signed by a trade-related co-worker who has seen you carry out this work during the last three years.

The other parts of the EWPA process – the practical assessment, professional discussion, and direct questioning – will take place on the premises when you join us at YTA for the day. Your performance across all these parts will determine whether you achieve the NVQ qualification.

If you are indeed successful, you can expect to be sent your certificate within 14 days. From there, you will be able to apply for the blue skilled worker CSCS card that will enable you to get on-site.

How does our EWPA route benefit those who have been carpenters for years?

Undertake our one-day EWPA, and you could soon be a much more employable carpenter

Every year, of course, is an opportunity for new beginnings, but it’s also undeniable that 2021 began in an especially grim way for many of us. The combination of a fresh coronavirus lockdown and the long and dark nights of January and February was not how most of us would have wished to start the year.

Now, though, there is hope: the spring is here, the skies are lighter for longer, and COVID-19 cases aren’t as high as they were. You might, then, be feeling slightly more inclined right now to investigate ways of upgrading your career, such as our own carpentry & joinery NVQ Level 2 courses here at YTA.

In this particular blog post, we’re not focusing on a ‘course’ as such, but instead on an assessment route for those who already possess considerable carpentry experience.

What we’re referring to, is the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA). This is an option for joiners who have spent five or more years in this profession, and – when passed – results in the award of an NVQ Level 2 carpentry diploma.

Why would you wish to take on this assessment route?

If you are already an experienced tradesperson, it won’t necessarily make much sense for you to take on a complete training course, just to obtain your NVQ Level 2 qualification in your chosen trade. Indeed, you may have the required skills and knowledge already – in which case, the EWPA route gives you the perfect opportunity to demonstrate them, and enhance your longer-term career prospects in the process.

This is a fast-track assessment route, only typically taking about one day – or two days, if needed – at our Yorkshire training and assessment centre.

The qualification that those satisfying the EWPA requirements then receive – the Cskills Awards NVQ Level 2 Carpentry Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction) – is the one required in order to attain the blue skilled worker CSCS card. That card, in turn, is the one that will enable you to gain site work as a skilled carpenter.

A straightforward process that could end with an invaluable qualification

In these times of prospective economic recovery, it’s well worth doing everything you can to boost your employability as a tradesperson. Undertaking our carpentry EWPA could be the ideal way to do exactly that, as long as your existing experience and knowledge satisfy the requirements.

To learn more about the carpentry EWPA, including the units included in it and the witness testimonies, practical assessment, professional discussion and direct questioning required for you to pass it, simply visit our relevant course page on our website.

Then, call YTA on 01274 682199, for an initial discussion with us about the process. If, as a result of this discussion, the EWPA route seems like it could be suitable for you, we’ll put you in touch with our NVQ carpentry assessor, who will be able to complete a ‘skills scan’ and help ensure you are making the right decision in pursuing the EWPA.

You’ll be in extremely safe hands when you choose to advance your career as a carpenter with the help of YTA, which is one of the UK’s most trusted providers of carpentry & joinery NVQ Level 2 courses!

Our one-day carpentry EWPA route could significantly advance your career

It’s often said that overnight success requires years of hard work, and if anyone is well-placed to appreciate that, it’s our team here at YTA!

After all, as a highly respected NOCN Cskills-approved construction training centre in Yorkshire, we have seen so many students complete our courses and start successful careers – and for that matter, take existing careers to the next level.

This brings us neatly onto the subject of our carpentry & joinery NVQ Level 2 courses – and more specifically, the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) option that we present to those wishing to attain the Cskills Awards NVQ Level 2 Carpentry Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction) – Site Carpentry QUA900.

This qualification is an especially significant one because it’s the one that, if you are a joiner, will allow you to secure the blue skilled worker CSCS card, so that you can actually work as a skilled professional on-site.

And with us, you could attain this invaluable diploma in just a day… provided that you already have five or more years’ carpentry experience.

You could be just one practical assessment away from this great qualification

The principle behind the EWPA route – which we also offer for wall and floor tilers, bricklayers and plasterers – is that if you already have the necessary knowledge and skills to do the job, you should hardly need to go through a longer course, just to gain the qualification required to do that job.

Instead, the EWPA uses a combination of practical assessment, professional discussion and witness testimonies to ascertain that your skills and knowledge are at a level meriting this important qualification.

The site carpentry NVQ itself includes three essential units covering general workplace safety, efficient work practices, and the movement and handling of resources.

But you can also support your effort to gain the diploma by adding three optional units from a range of five. These include in relation to the installation of first fixing and second fixing components, the erection of structural carcassing components, the maintenance of non-structural carpentry work, and the setup and use of transportable cutting and shaping machines.

Reach out to our skilled and seasoned professionals today

If the carpentry EWPA sounds like the right step to take for your career, why not get in touch with the YTA team now? We’ll be able to explain the process to you and ask you about your past carpentry experience; bear in mind that as well as the aforementioned five years’ experience, you’ll need to be knowledgeable in all of the essential NVQ units to gain the qualification.

After your initial enquiry, we can put you in touch with our NVQ carpentry assessor, who will be able to conduct a ‘skills scan’ to determine your suitability for the EWPA.

As renowned and experienced providers of carpentry & joinery NVQ Level 2 courses, we can give you the benefit of the right training routes for your own career. Simply call us now on 01274 682199 or 07400922788, or email info@ytatraining.com for further information and guidance.

Three NVQ’s achieved today!

We had three NVQ’s achieved today at YTA!

Two successful NVQ practical assessments in site carpentry NVQ level 2 and one in trowel occupations NVQ level 2 (bricklaying).

To gain the NVQ level 2 in just one day is only available to an experienced tradesperson with a minimum of 5 years experience through an assessment process called EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment). On the day of the EWPA you will be required to complete a practical assessment with your own tools within an allocated time to the awarding body specification (NOCN Cskills – Construction Skills). You will also be assessed through witness testimonies, professional discussion and direct questioning in order to cover all of the assessment criteria in the NVQ level 2.

Once you hold the NVQ level 2 along with your health and safety CSCS card test you can gain your blue skilled worker ‘skilled worker’ CSCS card. Once you have the NVQ level 2 your CSCS card will be upgraded to a blue card (skilled worker) and this means you can now work on any site completing your trade. We offer the following NVQ’s, Tiling NVQ Level 2, Plastering NVQ Level 2, Bricklaying NVQ Level 2, Carpentry & Joinery NVQ Level 2.

Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA
Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA
Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA
Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA
Bricklaying 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA
Bricklaying 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA

How the process works…

1) You contact us and enquire about EWPA for your trade. We will explain the process and ask you how many years experience you have in your trade area. You must have a minimum of 5 years experience and have experience & knowledge in all the NVQ units (as above) needed to gain the NVQ.

2) We will pass your details on to our NVQ assessor who will give you a call and complete what we call a ‘skills scan’. This is a chat amongst the two of you where he will want to know what type of work or projects you have been completing and for how long, he will want to know if you have experience and knowledge of the above NVQ units. He will explain that to achieve the NVQ you need to achieve all NVQ parts.

The NVQ parts…

NVQ Part 1) Witness testimonies. These are pre-printed in the NVQ EWPA pack and are sent out to you 2 weeks before your assessment date at our NVQ Centre in Bradford. You must get them signed by a trade related co-worker who has seen you complete this work in the last 3 years.

NVQ Part 2) Practical assessment. This is where you come to YTA and complete a practical assessment pre-set by the CITB – Now NOCN Cskills. The drawing plan with all specifications and measurements is sent out to you 2 weeks before this practical assessment. You must complete the assessment to spec and within the allocated time. You must bring you own tools for the assessment. Awaiting for you will be the materials to complete the task.

NVQ Part 3) Professional discussion. This is also completed at YTA on the same day as your practical assessment. The best way to describe this is like a structured discussion around the NVQ units. It is not a questions and answers session but more of a talking through jobs or projects you have completed and the assessor may ask you to elaborate on certain parts so you are effectively talking your way through the NVQ units as talking evidence. Thus turning your experience into the NVQ.

NVQ Part 4) Direct Questioning. Some assessment criteria within the nvq will ask you to ‘state’ or ‘describe’. These will be covered during the professional discussion or by direct questioning. The assessment criteria can be found on the specific trade NVQ pages listed above.

Time to book it and get on with it…

If you are happy to proceed and you feel confident and our NVQ assessor also feels confident in your ability and experience to achieve the NVQ we can go ahead with booking the NVQ. We require a deposit of £450. We then send you the documentation as detailed above and we will set your NVQ assessment date.

When you arrive for the NVQ assessment you will bring with you your signed witness testimonies and your tools. This is when you will pay the remaining balance of £450. You will then be inducted into the NVQ. During this day you will complete the practical assessment and professional discussion. Total price £900.

At the end of the day you will be told by the assessor if you have achieved or not achieved. If you have achieved you will be sent your certificate within 14 days (sometimes can be 7 days). You can now apply for your blue skilled worker CSCS card and get on site!

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information.

If you are out of work because you can’t get on site, we aim to complete this assessment within 2 weeks from your initial contact. You could be back on site earning a wage ASAP!

Three successful Carpentry NVQ’s today

We had three experienced carpenters successfully complete their Site Carpentry NVQ‘s today at YTA and we are happy to say that they all passed the 6 hour practical assessment. The Site Carpentry NVQ level 2 Diploma is gained through the EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment) if you have a minimum of 5 years experience working as Site Carpenter. We are so glad to say that we are off to a flying start following the lockdown period and all three achieved the 1 day NVQ level 2 practical assessment.

We have some new working practices in place which can be found on our COVID-19 PAGE and all went to plan, face-masks provided, social distancing and hand sanitiser stations around the centre all making the assessment process safe.

Are you an experienced Carpenter / Joiner of 5 or more years? then you can spend 1 day at our NOCN Cskills approved NVQ Centre in Yorkshire completing the wood occupations site carpentry NVQ level 2 EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment). We run this assessment on Saturday’s 7:30am until approx 4pm depending on your time. We run the assessment at our training centre in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The 1 day NVQ level 2 through EWPA costs £900 including vat, (£750 excl vat).

Successful Carpentry NVQ

How do we assess during COVID-19 and keep social distancing

We have a very large assessment centre (6500 sq foot) and the EWPA requires the candidate to work on their own in a dedicated assessment area for an allocated amount of time to complete the practical assessment (between 6 and 9 hours depending on which trade). We can easily distance a maximum of 3 assessment areas within the centre 6m apart from each other. The assessor will assess at distance and when required at the end of the assessment, ask you to stand to one side so he can measure and mark your practical assessment.  So the carpentry NVQ level 2 is still running but with no more than 3 candidates per time in the building.

We really can get you your NVQ quickly

What if you need to be earning a wage again even before you’ve completed our carpentry EWPA route? Well, that’s not too much of a drama, either – you simply need to first secure your place and pay your deposit, so that we can get you registered. This will enable you to apply for and gain a temporary card lasting for a maximum of six months until you have completed the EWPA.

Don’t wait any longer to email the YTA team at info@ytatraining.com during COVID-19 lockdown and on 01274 682199, to book your place or to discuss how we can best serve your construction training / assessment requirements. YTA have been delivering successful Carpentry NVQ’s to experienced carpenters for 14 years now.
