Joinery

6th May 2022 By Liz Spider

You’ll cover even more ground than you expect when you take on our 10-day accredited carpentry and joinery course

Here at YTA, we have long been known as one of the leading accredited centres for construction training, and this much is reflected in both the breadth and depth of our courses themselves.

That ‘accredited’ detail is a particularly important one when it comes to our top carpentry course, the 10-day NOCN Cskills Level 1 Accredited Carpentry and Joinery Course. That’s because it is a course giving those who enrol the chance to complete three Cskills accredited units of training, in relation to three crucial aspects of carpentry: door lining, hanging a door, and skirting and architrave. A further unit on window frames can also be added as a ‘bolt-on’.

Achieving all three of the essential Level 1 units will give you six credits and the opportunity to be awarded a NOCN Cskills unit accreditation certificate for ‘Skills for Carpentry & Joinery’. But what are the exact skills and knowledge that you can expect to acquire if you do commit to this course?

Get your carpentry career off to the best possible start

Our Level 1 course is specifically aimed at those who are interested in getting started in carpentry and joinery as a career, with an eye to eventually gaining the Cskills NVQ Level 2 in Site Carpentry. It is, then, a true beginner’s course, no prior experience in carpentry being needed before you embark on it – and this is reflected in how the course has been designed.

As the course gets underway, then, you can expect to first learn about how to use the basic hand tools associated with this trade. These will include the different saws that are used for various woods, as well as chisels and how to correctly use them.

You will then proceed to develop your skills in marking, cutting, and chiselling, by taking on a series of common woodwork joints of increasing levels of difficulty. That will provide the foundation for you to move on to such tasks as the building of a door frame, and the building of a stud partition with doorway. After that, you will get to handle architrave and skirting, including learning how to mite a skirting board on internal and external angles, as well as straight angle cuts.

But there’s even more catered for in this comprehensive course

One of our hallmarks as one of the most trusted accredited centres for construction training, is a commitment to going beyond the basics.

It is a policy that continues through our 10-day NOCN Cskills Level 1 Accredited Carpentry and Joinery Course, with the full breadth of important areas of carpentry covered also encompassing the likes of scribing joints to fit mouldings and skirting, terms used in partitioning, site carpentry operations included in second fixings, and much more.

If you have any questions about what is and isn’t covered in this 10-day course, and if you would appreciate some more tailored advice on whether it could be the right training option for you, you are always welcome to give our team a call – on 01274 682199 – before you commit.

Alternatively, feel free to send us an email via our online contact page. With our courses being delivered every week from Monday to Friday, we are confident that we will be able to provide you with this training on dates to suit you, if you do decide this route matches well with your circumstances and ambitions.

Five days is all that it takes to start an exciting new joinery career!

It’s fair to say that many of us have had reason to look at our lives afresh over the past year, with all of the disruption and hardship it has brought. For you, that might have even meant considering a new professional direction.

Maybe you’ve decided that you want to embark on a career that is highly durable, continuing to see high demand even in times of economic uncertainty? Or perhaps you’ve been thinking to yourself, “well, I’ve always wanted to learn a trade – so I might as well take the plunge now”?

Whatever your own specific situation and motivations may be, if you have been thinking of training to be a carpenter or joiner in 2021, you can’t do better than doing it with one of the leading accredited centres for construction training – YTA!

In fact, as a beginner, you only need to complete a five-day course with us in order to earn your first unit of accreditation as a carpenter or joiner. So, what exactly does our consistently-in-demand five-day Cskills Level 1 Unit Carpentry Course offer you?

A great first step to an NVQ Level 2 carpentry qualification

It is important to acknowledge that this particular five-day course on its own is a unit accreditation course that does not lead to the full NOCN Cskills Level 1 Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery; for that, you’ll need to take on the 10-day course that we also offer here at YTA.

Nonetheless, even if you do opt for ‘just’ the five-day course, you will cover a lot of ground, with the opportunity to earn a unit of accreditation that can be shown to potential employers or customers to demonstrate your competence in this important trade.

Another great attraction of this course is that you really can start it even if you have no prior experience in carpentry at all.

You will choose a Cskills unit to complete during your five days at our training centre. Then, once you’ve passed this course, you could always proceed to another Cskills Level 1 unit accreditation course, and eventually gain a Cskills NVQ Level 2 qualification in site carpentry.

You won’t waste a minute when training in carpentry with us!

In just five days at our West Yorkshire training centre, you can cover considerable ground in carpentry and joinery. This course encompasses such essentials of the trade as building a stud partition wall with a doorway, hanging a door including the fitting of locks, fitting skirtings and mouldings, the various tools required in carpentry and joinery, and so much more.

Experienced carpenters and joiners can earn as much as £40,000 a year, so this might not merely be an enjoyable and futureproof trade for you – it could also be a financially rewarding one in the long run. And this course represents an excellent way to start your journey.

Reach out to the YTA team today to ask any questions you may have about this popular course, and to enquire about booking your place to learn carpentry at one of the UK’s leading accredited centres for construction training.

Our one-day carpentry EWPA route could significantly advance your career

It’s often said that overnight success requires years of hard work, and if anyone is well-placed to appreciate that, it’s our team here at YTA!

After all, as a highly respected NOCN Cskills-approved construction training centre in Yorkshire, we have seen so many students complete our courses and start successful careers – and for that matter, take existing careers to the next level.

This brings us neatly onto the subject of our carpentry & joinery NVQ Level 2 courses – and more specifically, the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) option that we present to those wishing to attain the Cskills Awards NVQ Level 2 Carpentry Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction) – Site Carpentry QUA900.

This qualification is an especially significant one because it’s the one that, if you are a joiner, will allow you to secure the blue skilled worker CSCS card, so that you can actually work as a skilled professional on-site.

And with us, you could attain this invaluable diploma in just a day… provided that you already have five or more years’ carpentry experience.

You could be just one practical assessment away from this great qualification

The principle behind the EWPA route – which we also offer for wall and floor tilers, bricklayers and plasterers – is that if you already have the necessary knowledge and skills to do the job, you should hardly need to go through a longer course, just to gain the qualification required to do that job.

Instead, the EWPA uses a combination of practical assessment, professional discussion and witness testimonies to ascertain that your skills and knowledge are at a level meriting this important qualification.

The site carpentry NVQ itself includes three essential units covering general workplace safety, efficient work practices, and the movement and handling of resources.

But you can also support your effort to gain the diploma by adding three optional units from a range of five. These include in relation to the installation of first fixing and second fixing components, the erection of structural carcassing components, the maintenance of non-structural carpentry work, and the setup and use of transportable cutting and shaping machines.

Reach out to our skilled and seasoned professionals today

If the carpentry EWPA sounds like the right step to take for your career, why not get in touch with the YTA team now? We’ll be able to explain the process to you and ask you about your past carpentry experience; bear in mind that as well as the aforementioned five years’ experience, you’ll need to be knowledgeable in all of the essential NVQ units to gain the qualification.

After your initial enquiry, we can put you in touch with our NVQ carpentry assessor, who will be able to conduct a ‘skills scan’ to determine your suitability for the EWPA.

As renowned and experienced providers of carpentry & joinery NVQ Level 2 courses, we can give you the benefit of the right training routes for your own career. Simply call us now on 01274 682199 or 07400922788, or email info@ytatraining.com for further information and guidance.

We have received yet another 5 out of 5 review! The review has been left following the 10 day carpentry and joinery level 1 course.

Gareth Bass: Completed 10 day level 1 Carpentry & Joinery Course

I have just completed my two weeks Level 1 in carpentry and joinery. I really enjoyed my training over the two weeks, learning so many new skills in a friendly environment. My tutor Lawrence was great at explaining what we needed to do and demonstrating the technique used to complete the task. I would definitely recommend the YTA training centre if you are looking to start something new in the industry or further your skills. A big thank you to the team.

Turn to YTA for your fast-track route to a site carpentry NVQ Level 2 qualification

Provided that you are already an experienced joiner who has spent at least five years in your trade, you don’t have to invest a great amount of time and money into acquiring an NVQ Level 2. In fact, you can simply book our Cskills Awards Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction) – Site Carpentry QUA900 via the one-day Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) route.

Yes, you read that correctly; you really do only need to spend a single day at our training and assessment training centre if you arrive ready to start at 7:30am. We will then be able to complete the entire NVQ carpentry assessment before finishing the day at about 4pm.

What is the EWPA route?

It isn’t only our carpentry and joinery NVQ Level 2 courses for which the EWPA pathway is an option. Indeed, this NVQ assessment route was devised so that seasoned workers could achieve their NVQ Level 2 in their relevant trade by simply undergoing a practical assessment, and we also have EWPAs available in such fields as wall and floor tiling, bricklaying and plastering.

This route enables you to have the skills that you have gained in your trade over the years assessed in a single day, or no longer than two days if required. As long as you pass this assessment, you will then have the qualification that you need to attain the blue skilled worker CSCS card.

We’ll ensure that you can get on with your professional life

With its three mandatory units covering general workplace safety, efficient work practices and the movement and handling of resources, together with any three of a series of other units addressing such subjects as the installation of components and the maintenance of non-structural carpentry work, our Site Carpentry QUA900 EWPA route is an extensive, but swift one.

All parts of the NVQ – including witness testimonies, the practical assessment, professional discussion and direct questioning – must be completed to the necessary standard if you are to attain this qualification. But once you have, you will be able to immediately get back on site earning a wage.

In fact, if you aren’t able to get on site right now and are therefore out of work, we aim to complete this assessment within two weeks from when you first get in touch with us. Once you have paid your deposit for this course, we can get you registered and you will be able to apply for and gain a temporary card lasting for six months until you complete the EWPA.

We hold NVQ EWPAs every week, even over weekends – so why wait any longer to make this next crucial step in your carpentry career? We’re among the UK’s most trusted training centres for carpentry & joinery NVQ Level 2 courses – so don’t hesitate to call our professional and friendly team today on 01274 682199, or to complete and submit our simple contact form.

I'll be honest when I saw the advertisement and checked the place on google, I said another course to waste time, and contrary to having judged the place, the course was above my expectations, very practical, excellent teaching, I recommend 100 % five stars.

As an unskilled landlord I felt a little exposed due to the lack of plumbers out there doing small jobs, leaking sinks, new toilet inlets etc etc. I contacted YTA to bridge that gap a bit. After 5 days, I actually feel far more comfortable and I am actually going to tackle installing a bathroom. Very good, hands on training. Can be difficult to hear whats going on at times due to all trade training going on in the same room but I would definitely recommend them. I am actually going to do joinery, kitchen fitting and plastering too within the next 12 months.

Just finished the 5 day kitchen fitting course with Paul. I had very limited skills prior to this but have learnt loads and now feel totally competent to fully fit out my mums kitchen and utility room myself. Great course with very experienced tutor. Highly recommended. I'm going to do the plumbing course next. Thanks Paul and YTA.

Can't rate this place enough. I've done plumbing, plastering, and am about to finish a joinery course. The instructors are all very skilled in their respective trades and the class sizes are small enough that you have time to go at your own pace and really learn. All the instructors are very approachable and happy to answer questions, however stupid I thought they might sound. If you're considering a course here my advice is to do it. I started with virtually no practical skill at all and after each course I'm now confident that I can put these skills to good use in my house, and what I could produce by the end of each course is much better than what I've seen some tradesmen produce. You'll be pleasantly surprised by how much you'll learn at this place, even with no prior experience.

Finished my 10 day tiling course with Gary and it was superb.Considering I'd never laid a tile prior to starting the course and then to be tiling by 10am the morning is amazing and it's a credit to him, he has confidence in the people he's training even if they don't haha. Without thinking you just do it, he guides you along swimmingly.Gary, without saying it, recognises your pace and how confident or not you are and he goes with YOUR flow which I feel is correct.

I attended a 5 day plastering course .All the instructors are great and easy to get on with. Dave the plastering instructor is a top lad .Nothing to much trouble and really helpful.I’ve already started on my own house and the course definitely gave me the basics I needed to point me in the right direction.I would recommend Dave and all the staff to anyone thinking about having a go.I’m 61 served my time as a bricklayer straight from school but I wish I’d given plastering a shot years ago.Best thing I’ve done in a long time. Also ‘Bradford Digs’ great little place to stay.Cheers to all…Andy.
