NVQ

14th December 2021 By Liz Spider

Could 2022 be the year you start an exciting new plastering career?

Here at YTA, we can’t quite comprehend that it’s very nearly a New Year – 2021 just seems to have absolutely rushed by. However, we also realise that this has been far from the case for everyone. Indeed, the events of the past year may have even convinced you to take a whole new career direction, which – for many of our students – means becoming a qualified plasterer.

You only need to look at our broader selection of plastering courses to get a sense of the training options that you could take advantage of from us. For this particular blog post, however, we would like to focus specifically on the Cskills 10-day accredited plastering course that could earn you a ‘Skills for Plastering’ unit accreditation certificate.

Why might you be interested in this plastering course?

Part of your reason for enquiring about this course is likely to be the sheer reputability of NOCN Cskills (Construction Skills), this being the awarding body for construction NVQs.

Much more important, however, is what achieving this unit certificate would then enable you to do professionally. We receive queries about this course from a wide range of people, including those who have never previously learned a trade, as well as active tradespeople who seek to use the course as a means of expanding their skillset. You might even simply be a DIY enthusiast, in which case, yes, this course can be for you, too!

If you do satisfy the requirements for the certificate as a result of undertaking this intensive hands-on course, you will be able to quickly proceed to a plastering career, and perhaps eventually upgrade to a Level 2 NVQ plastering diploma.

10 days of wide-ranging training in plastering

Over the 10 days of this accredited plastering course – and if you struggle to commit to this much time at once, it is worth bearing in mind that we also offer a five-day course that is effectively the same as the first week of this one – you will cover considerable ground in relation to this trade.

Some of the things you will learn about – such as full measuring and in-depth quoting, insurance, tax and starting up in business – are the same as those covered on every YTA course. But alongside this, you will also be trained in such tasks as skimming to plasterboard, plastering to ceilings, repairing ceilings, bonding, and so much more.

You will be given plastering tools to use during the course, as well as your own full-size training bay to work in, with no need to share a bay with anyone else. Indeed, we also maintain a low student-to-trainer ratio, to help ensure you get the expert attention you need throughout the course.

It’s all designed this way to make sure that once you have successfully completed the 10 days of training, you will be in a position to take on the majority of plastering and rendering jobs you could be conceivably required to do in your subsequent career.

Get in touch now for all the advice and information you need

With so many plastering courses and other options for construction training and assessment available at YTA, we can understand if you require a bit more guidance to help you be confident that you have found the right route for you.

So, please do not hesitate to enquire to us today for further details or to book your place on a course, whether by phone or email.

Desire a bricklaying NVQ Level 2? You might not need to take on a full course if you already have extensive experience

There’s no question that an NVQ Level 2 diploma can quite literally ‘open doors’ for bricklayers, due to this being the qualification they require if they are to attain the blue skilled worker CSCS card for on-site work.

But if you are an ambitious tradesperson in this field and you wish to upgrade to this qualification, will you need to enrol on a lengthy course that you might struggle to even find the time to complete?

The answer is no, not necessarily. In fact, if you have at least five years’ bricklaying experience, you have the option of embarking on the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) route, which could result in you being better qualified in the space of just a day.

A fast-track route that will boost your employability

As the UK looks to gradually emerge from the coronavirus crisis, it’s fair to say that the economy is raring to go – and that bricklayers will continue to be in big demand for major construction projects. It should be no great surprise, then, that bricklaying plays a big part in our own extensive range of quality construction training programmes.

However, you won’t want to have to spend time being trained in aspects of this trade that you are already knowledgeable and skilled in, if it simply doesn’t feel necessary. That’s where our EWPA route comes in.

It’s based on a combination of professional discussion, witness statements and practical assessment, designed to ascertain whether you’re already a bricklayer of Level 2 NVQ standard. For you, it will simply be a case of demonstrating the skills and knowledge in bricklaying that you possess already, spending a day or two at our West Yorkshire training centre.

You will be told at the end of the assessment day whether you have passed – and if you have, you will be sent your certificate within 14 days. That’s it – you will then be able to apply for your blue skilled worker CSCS card in order to get on site. In fact, if you need to get on site even before completing the NVQ, we can arrange to get you registered and allow you to apply for a temporary six-month card, shortly after you have paid your deposit.

You’ll be put to the test – but the reward is a great qualification

We would urge you to click through to the page of our website dedicated to the bricklaying EWPA to learn more about what this popular assessment route involves. There are five mandatory units that make up the bricklaying NVQ, and you can pick one further optional unit to support your bid for the qualification.

One thing’s for sure – you’ll be in a great position to thrive in your bricklaying career for months and years to come when you obtain your NVQ Level 2 diploma with YTA. Get in touch with us now if you have any further questions about the EWPA or any of our wide range of other quality construction training programmes.

Three NVQ’s achieved today!

We had three NVQ’s achieved today at YTA!

Two successful NVQ practical assessments in site carpentry NVQ level 2 and one in trowel occupations NVQ level 2 (bricklaying).

To gain the NVQ level 2 in just one day is only available to an experienced tradesperson with a minimum of 5 years experience through an assessment process called EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment). On the day of the EWPA you will be required to complete a practical assessment with your own tools within an allocated time to the awarding body specification (NOCN Cskills – Construction Skills). You will also be assessed through witness testimonies, professional discussion and direct questioning in order to cover all of the assessment criteria in the NVQ level 2.

Once you hold the NVQ level 2 along with your health and safety CSCS card test you can gain your blue skilled worker ‘skilled worker’ CSCS card. Once you have the NVQ level 2 your CSCS card will be upgraded to a blue card (skilled worker) and this means you can now work on any site completing your trade. We offer the following NVQ’s, Tiling NVQ Level 2, Plastering NVQ Level 2, Bricklaying NVQ Level 2, Carpentry & Joinery NVQ Level 2.

Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA
Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA
Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA
Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA
Bricklaying 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA
Bricklaying 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA

How the process works…

1) You contact us and enquire about EWPA for your trade. We will explain the process and ask you how many years experience you have in your trade area. You must have a minimum of 5 years experience and have experience & knowledge in all the NVQ units (as above) needed to gain the NVQ.

2) We will pass your details on to our NVQ assessor who will give you a call and complete what we call a ‘skills scan’. This is a chat amongst the two of you where he will want to know what type of work or projects you have been completing and for how long, he will want to know if you have experience and knowledge of the above NVQ units. He will explain that to achieve the NVQ you need to achieve all NVQ parts.

The NVQ parts…

NVQ Part 1) Witness testimonies. These are pre-printed in the NVQ EWPA pack and are sent out to you 2 weeks before your assessment date at our NVQ Centre in Bradford. You must get them signed by a trade related co-worker who has seen you complete this work in the last 3 years.

NVQ Part 2) Practical assessment. This is where you come to YTA and complete a practical assessment pre-set by the CITB – Now NOCN Cskills. The drawing plan with all specifications and measurements is sent out to you 2 weeks before this practical assessment. You must complete the assessment to spec and within the allocated time. You must bring you own tools for the assessment. Awaiting for you will be the materials to complete the task.

NVQ Part 3) Professional discussion. This is also completed at YTA on the same day as your practical assessment. The best way to describe this is like a structured discussion around the NVQ units. It is not a questions and answers session but more of a talking through jobs or projects you have completed and the assessor may ask you to elaborate on certain parts so you are effectively talking your way through the NVQ units as talking evidence. Thus turning your experience into the NVQ.

NVQ Part 4) Direct Questioning. Some assessment criteria within the nvq will ask you to ‘state’ or ‘describe’. These will be covered during the professional discussion or by direct questioning. The assessment criteria can be found on the specific trade NVQ pages listed above.

Time to book it and get on with it…

If you are happy to proceed and you feel confident and our NVQ assessor also feels confident in your ability and experience to achieve the NVQ we can go ahead with booking the NVQ. We require a deposit of £450. We then send you the documentation as detailed above and we will set your NVQ assessment date.

When you arrive for the NVQ assessment you will bring with you your signed witness testimonies and your tools. This is when you will pay the remaining balance of £450. You will then be inducted into the NVQ. During this day you will complete the practical assessment and professional discussion. Total price £900.

At the end of the day you will be told by the assessor if you have achieved or not achieved. If you have achieved you will be sent your certificate within 14 days (sometimes can be 7 days). You can now apply for your blue skilled worker CSCS card and get on site!

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information.

If you are out of work because you can’t get on site, we aim to complete this assessment within 2 weeks from your initial contact. You could be back on site earning a wage ASAP!

Three successful Carpentry NVQ’s today

We had three experienced carpenters successfully complete their Site Carpentry NVQ‘s today at YTA and we are happy to say that they all passed the 6 hour practical assessment. The Site Carpentry NVQ level 2 Diploma is gained through the EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment) if you have a minimum of 5 years experience working as Site Carpenter. We are so glad to say that we are off to a flying start following the lockdown period and all three achieved the 1 day NVQ level 2 practical assessment.

We have some new working practices in place which can be found on our COVID-19 PAGE and all went to plan, face-masks provided, social distancing and hand sanitiser stations around the centre all making the assessment process safe.

Are you an experienced Carpenter / Joiner of 5 or more years? then you can spend 1 day at our NOCN Cskills approved NVQ Centre in Yorkshire completing the wood occupations site carpentry NVQ level 2 EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment). We run this assessment on Saturday’s 7:30am until approx 4pm depending on your time. We run the assessment at our training centre in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The 1 day NVQ level 2 through EWPA costs £900 including vat, (£750 excl vat).

How do we assess during COVID-19 and keep social distancing

We have a very large assessment centre (6500 sq foot) and the EWPA requires the candidate to work on their own in a dedicated assessment area for an allocated amount of time to complete the practical assessment (between 6 and 9 hours depending on which trade). We can easily distance a maximum of 3 assessment areas within the centre 6m apart from each other. The assessor will assess at distance and when required at the end of the assessment, ask you to stand to one side so he can measure and mark your practical assessment.  So the carpentry NVQ level 2 is still running but with no more than 3 candidates per time in the building.

We really can get you your NVQ quickly

What if you need to be earning a wage again even before you’ve completed our carpentry EWPA route? Well, that’s not too much of a drama, either – you simply need to first secure your place and pay your deposit, so that we can get you registered. This will enable you to apply for and gain a temporary card lasting for a maximum of six months until you have completed the EWPA.

Don’t wait any longer to email the YTA team at info@ytatraining.com during COVID-19 lockdown and on 01274 682199, to book your place or to discuss how we can best serve your construction training / assessment requirements. YTA have been delivering successful Carpentry NVQ’s to experienced carpenters for 14 years now.

Carpentry NVQ still running

Our site carpentry EWPA option could give you a Level 2 qualification in next to no time

There are certain things that anyone who wishes to become a professional carpenter needs to possess; a sound knowledge of building and construction, considerable attention to detail, a good ability to work well with others, the ability to use, repair and maintain tools and machinery…One more thing that you will definitely require if you are to gain site work as a skilled worker, though, is the blue skilled worker CSCS card. And if you are to obtain that, you’ll need to have the right qualification under your belt. That qualification is an NVQ Level 2 in carpentry, and while various construction training providers up and down the UK give you the opportunity to earn this qualification, there are few that make it as pleasurable as we do here at YTA!

The renowned fast-track route for joiners with previous experience

‘EWPA’ is short for ‘Experienced Worker Practical Assessment’. The purpose of this particular NVQ route is to enable someone whois already experienced in their chosen trade to achieve a Level 2 qualification much more quickly than would be the case if they were completely ‘starting afresh’ with their training.

In keeping with our reputation as one of the UK’s premier construction training providers, YTA offers EWPA fast-track options to those wishing to earn qualifications in not only site carpentry, but also wall and floor tiling, bricklaying and plastering. Focusing specifically on the site carpentry EWPA route, though, as long as you have five or more years’ joinery experience and both you and our NVQ assessor are confident about your chances of passing, you will be entitled to book a one or two-day assessment with us. This time you spend at our training centre will allow us to evaluate your skills through a combination of professional discussion, witness testimonies and the practical assessment.

If you are happy to arrive at our premises for 7:30am, we will be able to complete the entire NVQ carpentry assessment for you in one day. When the day concludes, the assessor will inform you whether or not you have achieved, and if you have, your certificate will be sent to you within 14 days.

How do we assess during COVID-19 and keep social distancing

We have a very large assessment centre (6500 sq foot) that is currently closed for our usual 5 & 10 days training courses but we are still assessing for NVQ level 2 qualifications through EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessments) at the weekends. The EWPA requires the candidate to work on their own in a dedicated assessment area for an allocated amount of time to complete the practical assessment (between 6 and 9 hours depending on which trade).

If you would like to gain your NVQ through the EWPA route or would like more information the please email info@ytatraining.com and the assessor will give you a call back within 24 hours.

Well, that’s not too much of a drama, either – you simply need to first secure your place and pay your deposit, so that we can get you registered. Don’t wait any longer to email the YTA team at info@ytatraining.com during COVID-19 lockdown and on 01274 682199 once we are all back at work, to book your place or to discuss how we can best serve your construction training / assessment requirements.

Could an NVQ Level 2 carpentry diploma be yours through the EWPA route?

Could an NVQ Level 2 carpentry diploma be yours through the EWPA route?

We may be home to a wide range of carpentry and joinery courses here at YTA – encompassing both five-day and 10-day options – but you don’t necessarily need to undertake any of these to significantly upgrade your qualifications.

That’s because, if you have already been a carpenter for five or more years, you could obtain a Cskills Awards NVQ Level 2 Carpentry Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction) within the space of a day, when you pursue our fast-track assessment route. You can be up and running with site work in next to no time.

Requiring approximately one day of your time – or possibly two days – at our NOCN Cskills-approved centre in Yorkshire, our Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) option will allow you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to achieve an NVQ Level 2. Your skills will be evaluated on the basis of professional discussion, witness testimonies and the practical assessment.

Indeed, there are three mandatory units that constitute this Site Carpentry NVQ Level 2, relating to the essential matters of general workplace safety, efficient work practices and the moving and handling of resources.

Carpentry NVQ level 2 assessment back

Carpentry NVQ level 2 assessment front

In addition to completing these units, you will be able to further support your bid for the NVQ Level 2 qualification by undertaking three optional units. With such subjects as the installation of first fixing components, the installation of second fixing components and the maintenance of non-structural carpentry work featuring in these units, they could be integral to your efforts to pass the EWPA route with YTA.

Complete all of the above to satisfaction, and you will be told at the end of the day that you have achieved the certificate, which will then be sent to you within 14 days, or perhaps even seven days. This, in turn, will enable you to apply for blue skilled worker CSCS card, so that you can get on site.

Enquire now about the joinery courses that best suit your needs as we touched on above, various carpentry and joinery courses are available here at YTA to suit different levels of skills, experience and ambition.

So, why not talk to us now to establish which of these paths represents the step you should take next in your career? Call the YTA team now on 01274 682199, and we’ll be able to clarify any uncertainties that you may have, as well as – if you are ready – take your booking.

I'll be honest when I saw the advertisement and checked the place on google, I said another course to waste time, and contrary to having judged the place, the course was above my expectations, very practical, excellent teaching, I recommend 100 % five stars.

As an unskilled landlord I felt a little exposed due to the lack of plumbers out there doing small jobs, leaking sinks, new toilet inlets etc etc. I contacted YTA to bridge that gap a bit. After 5 days, I actually feel far more comfortable and I am actually going to tackle installing a bathroom. Very good, hands on training. Can be difficult to hear whats going on at times due to all trade training going on in the same room but I would definitely recommend them. I am actually going to do joinery, kitchen fitting and plastering too within the next 12 months.

Just finished the 5 day kitchen fitting course with Paul. I had very limited skills prior to this but have learnt loads and now feel totally competent to fully fit out my mums kitchen and utility room myself. Great course with very experienced tutor. Highly recommended. I'm going to do the plumbing course next. Thanks Paul and YTA.

Can't rate this place enough. I've done plumbing, plastering, and am about to finish a joinery course. The instructors are all very skilled in their respective trades and the class sizes are small enough that you have time to go at your own pace and really learn. All the instructors are very approachable and happy to answer questions, however stupid I thought they might sound. If you're considering a course here my advice is to do it. I started with virtually no practical skill at all and after each course I'm now confident that I can put these skills to good use in my house, and what I could produce by the end of each course is much better than what I've seen some tradesmen produce. You'll be pleasantly surprised by how much you'll learn at this place, even with no prior experience.

Finished my 10 day tiling course with Gary and it was superb.Considering I'd never laid a tile prior to starting the course and then to be tiling by 10am the morning is amazing and it's a credit to him, he has confidence in the people he's training even if they don't haha. Without thinking you just do it, he guides you along swimmingly.Gary, without saying it, recognises your pace and how confident or not you are and he goes with YOUR flow which I feel is correct.

I attended a 5 day plastering course .All the instructors are great and easy to get on with. Dave the plastering instructor is a top lad .Nothing to much trouble and really helpful.I’ve already started on my own house and the course definitely gave me the basics I needed to point me in the right direction.I would recommend Dave and all the staff to anyone thinking about having a go.I’m 61 served my time as a bricklayer straight from school but I wish I’d given plastering a shot years ago.Best thing I’ve done in a long time. Also ‘Bradford Digs’ great little place to stay.Cheers to all…Andy.
