From Unfulfilled Job to Skilled Trade: Build Your Future with YTA!

Many people reach a stage in life where they realise they want something more — more satisfaction, more flexibility, and more control over their future. If you’ve ever thought about changing direction and learning a practical, rewarding skill, now is the perfect time to make it happen.

At YTA, we specialise in helping people just like you take that next step — retraining in trades such as plumbing, tiling, plastering, kitchen fitting, and carpentry & joinery. Our courses are designed to give you the skills, confidence, and qualifications to start working for yourself and build a career you can be proud of.

Why More People Are Turning to the Trades

Across the UK, skilled tradespeople are in high demand. From new builds to home renovations, there’s always a need for qualified plumbers, tilers, plasterers, kitchen fitters, and joiners. That means consistent work, great earning potential, and the freedom to choose how and where you work.

One of the biggest attractions of the trades is the opportunity to go self-employed. Many of our students finish their training and soon start taking on their own clients, setting their own hours, and building their own businesses. With a solid reputation and good workmanship, self-employed tradespeople can enjoy a steady flow of work and the satisfaction of being their own boss.

The Freedom and Flexibility of Working for Yourself

Imagine being able to choose your own projects, plan your schedule, and decide how much you earn. Self-employment in the trades offers exactly that. Whether you’re fitting kitchens, plumbing bathrooms, plastering walls, or crafting bespoke furniture, you’re in control of your career and your future.

At YTA, we don’t just teach you the technical skills — we help you gain the confidence to work independently. Our training gives you a solid foundation in both the practical and professional aspects of the trade, preparing you for real-world work from day one.

Hands-On Training, Real Skills, Recognised Qualifications

Our courses are fully accredited and taught by experienced tradespeople who know the industry inside out. You’ll learn in a supportive, workshop-based environment where you can practise real techniques on real projects.

We offer fast-track, hands-on training in:

  • Plumbing – learn pipework, bathroom installation, and fault finding.
  • Tiling – master wall and floor tiling, cutting, and setting out.
  • Plastering – gain experience in skimming, bonding, and surface preparation.
  • Kitchen Fitting – learn installation, measuring, and finishing to professional standards.
  • Carpentry & Joinery – develop core woodworking skills, joinery techniques, and on-site know-how.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or upskilling, our CSkills accredited courses and NVQ Level 2 assessments provide the practical expertise and recognised qualifications to help you stand out.

Success Stories That Inspire

“After years in retail, I decided to retrain as a kitchen fitter. The YTA course gave me everything I needed — hands-on experience, a qualification, and the confidence to go self-employed. Now I have my own business and a full diary of work!”
— Mark S., YTA Graduate

“The tutors were brilliant. I’d never picked up a trowel before, but by the end of my plastering course I felt ready to take on paid jobs. I’m now running my own plastering business, and I love it.”
— Joanne P., YTA Graduate

The UK’s Construction Industry is Desperate for Skilled Workers – Here’s Why It Matters

The UK is facing a critical skills shortage in the construction industry. According to a BBC report, tens of thousands of new recruits are needed to meet ambitious housing targets, with demand surging for skilled tradespeople in areas like carpentry, plumbing, tiling, plastering, and kitchen fitting. This shortfall is not just a challenge—it’s a huge opportunity for anyone eager to build a rewarding career in the trades.

If you’re considering a career change or looking to gain practical, high-value skills, there’s never been a better time to enter the industry. YTA Training is at the forefront of helping career changers and aspiring tradespeople seize this moment through comprehensive, hands-on accredited courses.

Why is the demand for skilled tradespeople so high?

The government’s pledge to deliver 1.5 million new homes in England by 2029 underscores the need for construction workers, with an estimated 30,000 recruits required for every 10,000 new houses. Yet, the Home Builders Federation (HBF) reveals that recruitment constraints, such as an ageing workforce, the end of free movement post-Brexit, and a lack of sufficient training opportunities, have left a significant talent gap.

Here’s how this impacts demand among key trades:

  • 20,000 bricklayers urgently required
  • 8,000 carpenters needed, with high demand for joinery
  • 2,400 new plumbers
  • 1,200 professional tilers
  • 3,200 plasterers for essential finishing work
  • 20,000 groundworkers to prepare development sites

This growing demand translates into competitive pay, with experienced bricklayers earning upwards of £45,000 annually, carpenters around £38,000, and electricians close to £44,000. Entering the industry now doesn’t just provide stable work—it offers financial security and long-term growth opportunities.

How YTA Training Prepares You for Success

Why Now Is the Best Time to Join the Trades

The skills shortage referenced in the BBC article highlights a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enter a trade where demand far outstrips supply. For decades, there has been a focus on promoting academic pathways over vocational ones, leaving a critical gap in skilled labour. This makes now the perfect time to upskill and take advantage of a booming market.

Whether you’ve always wanted to work with your hands, dreamt of becoming self-employed, or simply aspire to make a tangible difference in your day-to-day work, a trade skill is one of the most fulfilling paths to take. YTA Training ensures that you not only gain the knowledge and experience but also the confidence to thrive in your new career.

Site Carpentry NVQ Level 2 For Experienced Carpenters Through EWPA Route at YTA

Carpentry is one of those professions that it seems will always be around – and why wouldn’t it be? After all, the furniture items such as cabinets, shelves, and drawers that carpenters measure, create, and repair will always be needed.

And if you have spent years as a carpenter yourself, you will be aware of how varied and rewarding a job it can be, beyond the monetary reward – which can be as high as £38,000 or more a year in the case of the most seasoned carpenters.

This, in turn, brings us neatly onto the subject of our Experienced Worker Practical Assessment route, also known as ‘EWPA’.

While we are pleased to make available a variety of carpentry and joinery courses here at YTA, the EWPA is not a course. It is, instead, an assessment process, which can take just one or two days, and enables the already-experienced carpenter to achieve an NVQ Level 2 qualification.

That qualification, in turn, would allow you to gain access to site work as a carpenter with the blue skilled worker CSCS card, so this fast-track assessment route can be well worth the time and money investment. The EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment) can be seen below.

Site Carpentry NVQ Level 2 EWPA at YTA

Use your existing skills and knowledge to upgrade your qualifications as a carpenter

You will need to have at least five years’ carpentry or joinery experience in order to undergo this EWPA. If you do satisfy this requirement and reach out to us about the EWPA, we will arrange a call with our NVQ carpentry assessor, who will complete a ‘skills scan’ with you to assess whether you have the necessary experience and knowledge of the NVQ units.

And what are those NVQ units? Well, in the case of this site carpentry NVQ, there are three main units, covering the crucial subjects of general workplace safety, efficient work practices, and the movement and handling of resources.

Various optional units are also available, and which could help you further strengthen your chances of passing the EWPA and achieving the NVQ qualification. These optional units encompass important aspects of the trade such as the installation of first fixing and second fixing components, the erection of structural carcassing components, and the maintenance of non-structural carpentry work.

If you do decide to do the EWPA, you will need to arrange a date at our Yorkshire training centre. Two weeks prior to that date, pre-printed witness testimonies will be sent to you, and you will need to get them signed by a trade-related co-worker who has seen you carry out this work during the last three years.

The other parts of the EWPA process – the practical assessment, professional discussion, and direct questioning – will take place on the premises when you join us at YTA for the day. Your performance across all these parts will determine whether you achieve the NVQ qualification.

If you are indeed successful, you can expect to be sent your certificate within 14 days. From there, you will be able to apply for the blue skilled worker CSCS card that will enable you to get on-site.

YTA Reviews can be found here

Are you ready to take the next steps towards an enhanced carpentry career?

Would you like to get talking to us about whether taking on the carpentry EWPA could be the right step for you, or whether you might even be better served by one of our other highly regarded carpentry and joinery courses?

If so, it’s a straightforward process to give YTA a call now on 01274682199, or to send us an email.

Could 2022 be the year you start an exciting new plastering career?

Here at YTA, we can’t quite comprehend that it’s very nearly a New Year – 2021 just seems to have absolutely rushed by. However, we also realise that this has been far from the case for everyone. Indeed, the events of the past year may have even convinced you to take a whole new career direction, which – for many of our students – means becoming a qualified plasterer.

You only need to look at our broader selection of plastering courses to get a sense of the training options that you could take advantage of from us. For this particular blog post, however, we would like to focus specifically on the Cskills 10-day accredited plastering course that could earn you a ‘Skills for Plastering’ unit accreditation certificate.

Why might you be interested in this plastering course?

Part of your reason for enquiring about this course is likely to be the sheer reputability of NOCN Cskills (Construction Skills), this being the awarding body for construction NVQs.

Much more important, however, is what achieving this unit certificate would then enable you to do professionally. We receive queries about this course from a wide range of people, including those who have never previously learned a trade, as well as active tradespeople who seek to use the course as a means of expanding their skillset. You might even simply be a DIY enthusiast, in which case, yes, this course can be for you, too!

If you do satisfy the requirements for the certificate as a result of undertaking this intensive hands-on course, you will be able to quickly proceed to a plastering career, and perhaps eventually upgrade to a Level 2 NVQ plastering diploma.

10 days of wide-ranging training in plastering

Over the 10 days of this accredited plastering course – and if you struggle to commit to this much time at once, it is worth bearing in mind that we also offer a five-day course that is effectively the same as the first week of this one – you will cover considerable ground in relation to this trade.

Some of the things you will learn about – such as full measuring and in-depth quoting, insurance, tax and starting up in business – are the same as those covered on every YTA course. But alongside this, you will also be trained in such tasks as skimming to plasterboard, plastering to ceilings, repairing ceilings, bonding, and so much more.

You will be given plastering tools to use during the course, as well as your own full-size training bay to work in, with no need to share a bay with anyone else. Indeed, we also maintain a low student-to-trainer ratio, to help ensure you get the expert attention you need throughout the course.

It’s all designed this way to make sure that once you have successfully completed the 10 days of training, you will be in a position to take on the majority of plastering and rendering jobs you could be conceivably required to do in your subsequent career.

Get in touch now for all the advice and information you need

With so many plastering courses and other options for construction training and assessment available at YTA, we can understand if you require a bit more guidance to help you be confident that you have found the right route for you.

So, please do not hesitate to enquire to us today for further details or to book your place on a course, whether by phone or email.

Desire a bricklaying NVQ Level 2? You might not need to take on a full course if you already have extensive experience

There’s no question that an NVQ Level 2 diploma can quite literally ‘open doors’ for bricklayers, due to this being the qualification they require if they are to attain the blue skilled worker CSCS card for on-site work.

But if you are an ambitious tradesperson in this field and you wish to upgrade to this qualification, will you need to enrol on a lengthy course that you might struggle to even find the time to complete?

The answer is no, not necessarily. In fact, if you have at least five years’ bricklaying experience, you have the option of embarking on the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) route, which could result in you being better qualified in the space of just a day.

A fast-track route that will boost your employability

As the UK looks to gradually emerge from the coronavirus crisis, it’s fair to say that the economy is raring to go – and that bricklayers will continue to be in big demand for major construction projects. It should be no great surprise, then, that bricklaying plays a big part in our own extensive range of quality construction training programmes.

However, you won’t want to have to spend time being trained in aspects of this trade that you are already knowledgeable and skilled in, if it simply doesn’t feel necessary. That’s where our EWPA route comes in.

It’s based on a combination of professional discussion, witness statements and practical assessment, designed to ascertain whether you’re already a bricklayer of Level 2 NVQ standard. For you, it will simply be a case of demonstrating the skills and knowledge in bricklaying that you possess already, spending a day or two at our West Yorkshire training centre.

You will be told at the end of the assessment day whether you have passed – and if you have, you will be sent your certificate within 14 days. That’s it – you will then be able to apply for your blue skilled worker CSCS card in order to get on site. In fact, if you need to get on site even before completing the NVQ, we can arrange to get you registered and allow you to apply for a temporary six-month card, shortly after you have paid your deposit.

You’ll be put to the test – but the reward is a great qualification

We would urge you to click through to the page of our website dedicated to the bricklaying EWPA to learn more about what this popular assessment route involves. There are five mandatory units that make up the bricklaying NVQ, and you can pick one further optional unit to support your bid for the qualification.

One thing’s for sure – you’ll be in a great position to thrive in your bricklaying career for months and years to come when you obtain your NVQ Level 2 diploma with YTA. Get in touch with us now if you have any further questions about the EWPA or any of our wide range of other quality construction training programmes.

A bricklaying Level 2 diploma can be yours in just a day, if you’re experienced

As a leading and trusted construction training centre in Bradford, West Yorkshire, YTA is certainly a place to which to turn for a wide range of both beginner and advanced bricklaying courses. Indeed, we take great pride in our ongoing role in getting all manner of would-be and current bricklayers ready for the next stage of their careers.

However, you don’t necessarily need to embark on an entire several-day course with us to take your life as a bricklayer to a whole new level.

That’s because, if you already have five or more years’ experience in this trade, you also have the option of our Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) route, which enables you to obtain a Cskills NVQ Level 2 diploma in the space of just a day.

Not a ‘course’, but an assessment route

It is important to emphasise that our EWPA route is very much what it sounds like – an assessment route, not strictly a ‘course’.

It’s a way for bricklayers who already possess specialised skills and experience to demonstrate this, and earn a qualification in the process – the qualification they need in order to secure the blue skilled worker CSCS card.

Converting your bricklaying skills and capabilities into a qualification

The bricklaying EWPA at YTA combines professional discussion with witness statements and a simple practical assessment. Five mandatory units are covered, in relation to general workplace safety, efficient work practices, the movement and handling of resources, and the erection and setting out of masonry structures.

These units are supported by one of a list of optional units, encompassing such further aspects of the trade as the erection of masonry cladding, the placement and finishing of non-specialist concrete, and the installation of drainage.

Reach out to us now to get your EWPA process underway!

Don’t stress – when you first get in touch with us, we’ll arrange our expert NVQ assessor to complete a ‘skills scan’ with you. This will help both of you to determine your likelihood of achieving the NVQ, so that neither of you waste time, effort and money on an assessment route that may not represent the right next step for you as a bricklayer.

If the two of you are confident that you will be able to pass the assessment, and you’re happy to proceed, we will then be able to go ahead and book the bricklaying EWPA for you.

Don’t worry if you need to get on-site prior to your assessment date. After you pay for your deposit, we can get you registered, followed by emailing you the registration confirmation that will enable you to apply for and gain a temporary, six-month card.

At the end of the assessment day, your assessor will inform you whether or not you have achieved the NVQ – and if successful, you can expect to receive your certificate within 14 days. This will allow you to apply for the blue skilled worker CSCS card.

For more information about the bricklaying EWPA or any of our wide range of novice, intermediate and advanced bricklaying courses, simply give the YTA team a call today, on 01274 682199 or 07400922788. Alternatively, you can reach out to us via email. We wish you the very best for your future career in this highly rewarding trade!
