New 5 Star YTA Review – Carpentry & Joinery Course

New 5 star YTA review following the completion of our 10 day Cskills level 1 certificate in carpentry & joinery.

Kieran Smolka – Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery Course

An excellent 2 weeks doing the level 1 carpentry and joinery course, the trainer was patient and very knowledgeable, he gave lots of tips and tricks to help. An easy company to deal with and I felt they are value for money. Hopefully I will be back to do my level 2 in the future.

Thank you Kieran for a great 5 star YTA review. Once you have gained a minimum of 3 years experience we can then look at you enrolling onto the NVQ level 2 in either site carpentry or bench joinery.

During the 10 day Level 1 Certificate in and joinery course and you will undertake 5 assessments to achieve a FULL nationally accredited qualification (NOCN Cskills Level 1 Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery).

You will be trained and assessed on the following units:

  • NOCN Cskills Level 1 unit Health and Safety in construction trades
  • NOCN Cskills Level 1 unit Communication effectively in construction trades
  • NOCN Cskills Level 1 unit construct woodworking joints
  • NOCN Cskills Level 1 unit fit architrave and skirting
  • NOCN Cskills Level 1 unit fit ironmongery to an internal door

NOCN Cskills (Construction Skills) (formally CITB) are the awarding body for construction NVQ’s so the Cskills brand and logos are well known within the construction industry.

The full qualification you will complete over the 10 days will be NOCN Cskills Level 1 Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery and this will show potential employers or customers your competence in your chosen trade. This 10 day Cskills level 1 Certificate in carpentry and joinery course is ideal if you are wanting to start a career in carpentry and eventually move on to gain your Cskills NVQ level 2 in Site Carpentry. No previous experience in carpentry & joinery is necessary before completing this course.

Throughout the course you will cover many aspects of carpentry and joinery including:

  • Build a stud partition wall with a doorway
  • Hang a door including fitting of locks
  • Fitting of skirting and mouldings with external and internal corners
  • Scribing joints to fit mouldings and skirting
  • Site carpentry operations included in second fixings
  • Resources required to fix mouldings
  • Fixing mouldings
  • Terms used in partitioning
  • Resources required to carry out partitioning
  • Produce and assemble studwork partition
  • Variety of tools used and explained in carpentry and joinery

YTA Plastering Course Video Review

Gemma leaves a great plastering course video review during her final day on the YTA 5 day intensive plastering course.

The 5 day plastering course covers boarding up both walls and ceilings, over skimming previously skimmed walls, plastering on walls and ceilings plus applying board and plaster to block-work and stud partition walls. You will be given a set of plastering tools to use during the course. You will work in your own full size plastering training bay which is bigger than most small bedrooms or bathrooms (2.4m in length and full room height at 2.4m).

You will not share your bay! We only have 5 plastering training bays to ensure you are taught to the highest standard with a low student to teacher / trainer ratio.

The room is filled with various scenarios – stud wall, block wall, pre-skimmed wall, a window, a block wall corner and everyone’s favourite – a decent size ceiling!

Gemma YTA Plastering Course Review

Repair plastering and feathering in larger walls is also covered on our 5 day extremely ‘hands on’ practical plastering course.

The YTA 5 day plastering course is aimed at complete beginners or even those already in the trade such as a tiler or a plumber looking to add a few more skills to their businesses to help their own projects along.

More 5 star excellent reviews of YTA

More 5 star excellent reviews of YTA have just come in!

Phil Marr – 10 day Carpentry & Joinery Course

I did the 2 week carpentry course in February 20. The course was great, very well led by Lawrie who is very capable in all aspects of carpentry and general construction. Tools and materials provided were all top -drawer and the assignment based learning was ideal for my needs. I would highly recommend YTA to anyone who wants to understand about proper traditional woodworking and construction techniques.

New 5 star reviews for YTA

New 5 star reviews have been left following the completion of YTA courses. The reviews were yet again 5 stars!

William James completed the plumbing, tiling and plastering courses over a 3 week period back of consecutive weeks. The courses are are all very hands on with practically focused training and he has left a fantastic new 5 star review for YTA.

William new 5 star YTA review
William new 5 star YTA review

I have just completed 3 weeks training with YTA; 5 days plumbing, 5 days tiling and 5 days plastering. I had little or no experience of these skills/trades before starting, other than watching a few YouTube videos. The training facility is well laid out and has everything you could need. All 3 coursed have a good level of content and progress logically with the pace of the course adapting to the skills and speed of the students. All the trainers have a wealth of knowledge which they are eager to pass on. They bring their years of trade experience to the training in an open and easy to understand way. As well as great instruction you can’t put a value on the practical experience gained on the courses. You can listen to instruction a watch YouTube all you want but you cannot beat getting your hands on the tools and practicing what you have learned. The way the training and the facility is designed and laid out enables you to do exactly this with lots of practical scenarios that cover many different situations without worrying about causing damage etc. I highly recommend YTA.

Thank you William for such a great review and we are glad you enjoyed the plumbing, tiling and plastering courses.

We also received another new 5 star review for YTA this past couple of days from Vinod who completed the 5 day plumbing course last week. Another great review and another 5 stars, thank you so much!

5 star YTA reviews this week!

We are happy to announce that we’ve received two 5 star YTA reviews this week taking our 5 star reviews tally up to 286! Wow, thank you everyone.

Or first review this week was left by Andy Flanagan who has completed our 10 day level 1 plumbing course. The first week was completed before the lockdown so now he was able to come back and finish off the second week of the plumbing course which covers domestic hot water and heating systems.

I recently did a level one 10 day plumbing course and thoroughly enjoyed it. One day I was plumbing a whole bathroom, next day plumbing radiators. Second week plumbing a whole central heating system. A very hands on and practical teaching course, no sitting in classrooms. Both graham and Lyndon were superb. I’ll be back at some point later this year to do tiling and plastering. Thanks gents.

Andy Flanagan 10 day plumbing course review. 5 star YTA reviews this week

Thank you Andy for the great YTA review.

Our next review came in from Michael Seal who completed the 5 day plumbing course last week.

I recently completed the five-day plumbing course at YTA. Before this course, I had no experience in plumbing whatsoever. I have a few small plumbing jobs to do around the house and recently experienced a leak which is when I realised I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to plumbing. The YTA was perfect, and it’s hands-on approach means you are bending, cutting and soldering pipes before lunchtime on day one. The rest of the week was spent plumbing bathrooms, radiators, kitchens, outside taps and waste pipes. All the instructors have years of experience as plumbers and share their experiences and tips as you go through the week. I highly recommend this course for anyone that wants a hands-on introduction to plumbing or even think of changing trades and becoming a plumber. I plan on going back later this year to do the carpentry course.

Michael Seal 5 day plumbing course review

Thank you Michael for such a great review, glad you enjoyed the course and we look forward to you possibly coming back for the carpentry and joinery course.

We have enjoyed reading the 5 star YTA reviews this week, keep them coming in!

Three NVQ’s achieved today!

We had three NVQ’s achieved today at YTA!

Two successful NVQ practical assessments in site carpentry NVQ level 2 and one in trowel occupations NVQ level 2 (bricklaying).

To gain the NVQ level 2 in just one day is only available to an experienced tradesperson with a minimum of 5 years experience through an assessment process called EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment). On the day of the EWPA you will be required to complete a practical assessment with your own tools within an allocated time to the awarding body specification (NOCN Cskills – Construction Skills). You will also be assessed through witness testimonies, professional discussion and direct questioning in order to cover all of the assessment criteria in the NVQ level 2.

Once you hold the NVQ level 2 along with your health and safety CSCS card test you can gain your blue skilled worker ‘skilled worker’ CSCS card. Once you have the NVQ level 2 your CSCS card will be upgraded to a blue card (skilled worker) and this means you can now work on any site completing your trade. We offer the following NVQ’s, Tiling NVQ Level 2, Plastering NVQ Level 2, Bricklaying NVQ Level 2, Carpentry & Joinery NVQ Level 2.

Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA
Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA
Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA
Site Carpentry 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA
Bricklaying 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA
Bricklaying 1 day NVQ level 2 EWPA at YTA

How the process works…

1) You contact us and enquire about EWPA for your trade. We will explain the process and ask you how many years experience you have in your trade area. You must have a minimum of 5 years experience and have experience & knowledge in all the NVQ units (as above) needed to gain the NVQ.

2) We will pass your details on to our NVQ assessor who will give you a call and complete what we call a ‘skills scan’. This is a chat amongst the two of you where he will want to know what type of work or projects you have been completing and for how long, he will want to know if you have experience and knowledge of the above NVQ units. He will explain that to achieve the NVQ you need to achieve all NVQ parts.

The NVQ parts…

NVQ Part 1) Witness testimonies. These are pre-printed in the NVQ EWPA pack and are sent out to you 2 weeks before your assessment date at our NVQ Centre in Bradford. You must get them signed by a trade related co-worker who has seen you complete this work in the last 3 years.

NVQ Part 2) Practical assessment. This is where you come to YTA and complete a practical assessment pre-set by the CITB – Now NOCN Cskills. The drawing plan with all specifications and measurements is sent out to you 2 weeks before this practical assessment. You must complete the assessment to spec and within the allocated time. You must bring you own tools for the assessment. Awaiting for you will be the materials to complete the task.

NVQ Part 3) Professional discussion. This is also completed at YTA on the same day as your practical assessment. The best way to describe this is like a structured discussion around the NVQ units. It is not a questions and answers session but more of a talking through jobs or projects you have completed and the assessor may ask you to elaborate on certain parts so you are effectively talking your way through the NVQ units as talking evidence. Thus turning your experience into the NVQ.

NVQ Part 4) Direct Questioning. Some assessment criteria within the nvq will ask you to ‘state’ or ‘describe’. These will be covered during the professional discussion or by direct questioning. The assessment criteria can be found on the specific trade NVQ pages listed above.

Time to book it and get on with it…

If you are happy to proceed and you feel confident and our NVQ assessor also feels confident in your ability and experience to achieve the NVQ we can go ahead with booking the NVQ. We require a deposit of £450. We then send you the documentation as detailed above and we will set your NVQ assessment date.

When you arrive for the NVQ assessment you will bring with you your signed witness testimonies and your tools. This is when you will pay the remaining balance of £450. You will then be inducted into the NVQ. During this day you will complete the practical assessment and professional discussion. Total price £900.

At the end of the day you will be told by the assessor if you have achieved or not achieved. If you have achieved you will be sent your certificate within 14 days (sometimes can be 7 days). You can now apply for your blue skilled worker CSCS card and get on site!

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information.

If you are out of work because you can’t get on site, we aim to complete this assessment within 2 weeks from your initial contact. You could be back on site earning a wage ASAP!
