  • 5-day intensive plumbing course 

If you’re reading this as a complete beginner who might have never learned a trade, this very hands-on and practical course could be an excellent option for you. It has also been designed for people who are already tradespersons, such as plasterers, tilers, and joiners, who wish to add plumbing capabilities to their skillset. 

Whatever your own exact circumstances are, you can expect that once you have completed this course, you will have the necessary knowledge and understanding to take on plumbing jobs around the home, or to launch a business as a plumber. 

On the first day of our intensive plumbing course in the UK, you will be working with and using 15mm and 22mm copper pipe and fixings. This will be followed on Tuesday with the installation of a bathroom, encompassing the bath, taps, toilet, basin, and all wastes. 

Wednesday on this course will see you learn about internal cistern fittings and the various types of flush mechanisms you can expect to come across as a plumber. You will find out about such topics as the diagnosis of toilet flush problems, how different faults can be repaired, and the pricing of plumbing projects. 

Moving into the last two days of the course, you will get to install a small two-radiator system, plumb up a kitchen sink, complete a tap washer replacement, and add a garden tap to completed kitchen pipework, among other tasks. 

All in all, then, our five-day intensive plumbing course in the UK will take you through a lot of jobs and processes, and give you considerable confidence. You should be able to start a plumbing job independently more-or-less as soon as you leave the course. 

  • 5-day advanced plumbing course 

As the name suggests, this course is aimed at people who already possess a foundational level of plumbing knowledge. It is an ideal second-week course following on from our five-day intensive plumbing course. 

This advanced course builds on the content of the intensive course. It involves the learner completing the fitting of a domestic hot-water system. They can also expect to fit an entire bathroom suite, in addition to finding out more about rainwater guttering, hoppers, and drainage. 

Taking on this course will give you the option of working to a level 1 qualification, which is one more great reason to consider it if you have already done the intensive course separately.

Even if you’re approaching the trade of plastering via this course from a complete “standing start” (in other words, with no experience at all), you can expect to make rapid progress. 

By “rapid progress”, we mean that on successful completion of this course, you will be equipped with a clear practical and theoretical understanding of plastering. More than that, you will be in a position to set up as a plasterer straight away, if you wish. 

This Level 1 course will see you trained and assessed in three NOCN Cskills Level 1 units – specifically in relation to the preparation and fixing of plasterboard, as well as non-solid internal backgrounds, and the application of plaster to solid backgrounds. 

  • This course will give you more than just enhanced plastering ability 

You will certainly learn about and get to grips with so many different aspects of plastering over the 10 days of our course – encompassing the use of plastering tools, the plastering of walls and ceilings, “feathering in”, the plastering of arches, and more. 

However, this course will be no less valuable on account of the knowledge it gives you about health and safety, business start-up, and even marketing techniques. 

This course is, after all, a starting point. So, there is rightly a strong emphasis on enabling the learner to put down sturdy foundations for subsequent training and the gaining of experience in plastering.

‘Two in one’: how much can you get done in 10 days on a Level 1 wall and floor tiling course?

The high-quality tiling of spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens, shops, and restaurants will always be required. Sure enough, the popularity and demand for wall and floor tiling skills has remained durable down the years. 

So, when you are looking for a “safe bet” in your chosen career, you could hardly do better than training to become a tiler. That still leaves the question, though, of what tiling courses would best suit your needs and ambitions. 

In today’s blog post, we’re showing that you don’t necessarily need to book just one beginner’s tiling course, when you could have two courses in one go! 

We are, of course, referring to the NOCN Cskills 10-day Level 1 Accredited Wall and Floor Tiling Course. 

What do we mean by “two courses in one”? 

As our “range-topping” wall and floor tiling course here at YTA, this 10-day accredited course effectively combines our five-day intensive tiling course in the first week, with our advanced tiling course in the second week. 

Given that the aforementioned intensive tiling course is suitable for people with no prior tiling experience at all, much the same can be said for this complete 10-day course. 

However, a crucial thing to know about the “full” 10-day course, is that it incorporates Cskills assessments. Specifically, those who enrol on this course will be trained and assessed in two Cskills Level 1 assessment units: Tiling A Wall with Decorative Features (Square Tiles), and Tiling A Floor with Obstacles. 

Achieving both these units will give you six units at Level 1. This means you would be awarded a ‘Skills for Tiling’ unit accreditation certificate from the highly respected construction NVQ awarding body, NOCN Cskills – a demonstration of your tiling competence to potential employers or customers. 

You could hardly hope for a better foundation for your future tiling career, as you leave our course to gain more experience and look towards NVQ Level 2 training. 

So, what is involved in this tiling course? 

As we stated above, this 10-day course can be effectively seen as two five-day courses combined. So, let’s quickly take you through what you can expect over those two weeks: 

  • The first week will begin with coverage of health and safety matters, before you proceed to the preparation of surfaces and setting out tiling for kitchens. You will go on to learn about such aspects as the cutting of tiles, grouting, silicone sealing, marking and cutting tiles around obstacles, drilling holes in tiles, and full measuring and quoting. 
  • The second week will see you tiling a kitchen that has a diamond splashback going up to the funnel. You will also spend this week setting out with windows, diamond drilling around waste and supply pipes, and tiling in the bathroom on the floor. You will even, on the final day, install underfloor heating before tiling on it. Final questions will be answered, and certificates will be presented.

Take the NVQ Level 2 EWPA route to fast-track your career in site carpentry

With its well-deserved reputation as a highly secure career that also offers considerable earnings potential – as much as £40,000 for those who gain experience through the years – carpentry is a trade that you are unlikely to ever regret learning. 

After all, even if you aren’t active as a professional carpenter right now, having carpentry skills in your armoury could turn out to be very handy at a future point. 

It is well-documented that the UK construction industry is continuing to suffer from skills shortages. Factors like an ageing existing workplace and the constant need for new construction and renovation projects, further underline that as a qualified carpenter or joiner, you will rarely lack interesting opportunities. 

But if you’re already experienced in carpentry, we have a pathway that may intrigue you 

Are you reading this as a joiner with five or more years’ experience in this trade? Perhaps you’re looking to move your career up to the next level – and more specifically, gain the blue skilled worker CSCS card? If so, we are pleased here at YTA to make available what is known as the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) route. 

To be clear, this is not a course, but instead an assessment route, lasting just one or two days. At our Bradford training centre, we can carry out this assessment with you on a Saturday from around 7:30am, lasting until approximately 4pm. 

The idea behind the EWPA is that if you pass this process after an EWPA NVQ assessor evaluates your skills, you will be granted the carpentry NVQ. 

The qualification in question is the Cskills Awards Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction) – Site Carpentry QUA900. 

What is involved in the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment for site carpentry? 

Taking advantage of the carpentry EWPA is a relatively straightforward process. After reaching out to us and enquiring about the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment, we will set out the essentials to you, in addition to asking you about your experience in this trade. 

In order to gain the NVQ, merely having five years’ experience in carpentry won’t be enough. That’s because you must also be sufficiently knowledgeable in the various units that make up this qualification. 

After you have had a conversation over the phone with our NVQ carpentry assessor, it will be decided between the two of you whether to go ahead and book the EWPA. We will need a deposit for this, which is one more reason why you need to establish confidence in your ability to achieve the NVQ, and only then proceed with the booking. 

A carpentry NVQ pack, with preprinted witness testimonies that will need to be signed by a trade-related co-worker, will be sent out to you several weeks prior to your arranged assessment date at our West Yorkshire premises. 

Then, on the day itself, such elements as a practical assessment, professional discussion, and direct questioning will enable us to determine whether you are up to the necessary standard. 

Success on the EWPA, will mean a big stride forward for you as a carpenter 

In the event that you do pass this assessment process, you can expect to receive your certificate within two weeks. Then, it won’t be long before you will be able to get on site with your blue skilled worker CSCS card.
