Tiling

9th September 2025 By Graham Binns

Five days on our intensive tiling course is enough to gain serious knowledge

The task of applying tiles across a surface might seem a straightforward enough process… until a relative “amateur” attempts to take it on, perhaps as part of a domestic DIY project. When they do, they tend to rapidly discover that in order to achieve a professional-looking and smart result, great skill and precision are essential.

Indeed, a wide range of qualities is typically needed in order to survive and thrive as a tiler. It is crucial for such tradespeople to possess a strong knowledge of building and construction, and to apply great thoroughness and attention to detail to their work. They must also be able to work well with their hands, and to cooperate effectively with other people.

Given the various capabilities and characteristics that aspiring tilers need to have, it should be no surprise that experienced people in this trade can earn as much as £38,000 a year.

This does raise the question, though, of where someone may start if they wish to become a tiler. Our tiling intensive courses here at YTA give an answer to that question.

Why might you enrol on our five-day intensive tiling course?

At our West Yorkshire premises, we offer various training options that will be of interest to people seeking to develop a tiling career. One such route is our 10-day intensive “ready for anything” tiling course, which can be split into two separate weeks if needed.

However, you don’t even need to spend that long with us in order to make great strides towards your new career as a tiler. Whether you’re a complete beginner who hasn’t done any wall or floor tiling in the past, or you’re an enthusiastic DIYer or perhaps someone with a high level of capability in another trade, there is a lot you can gain from our five-day intensive course.

Major selling points of this training pathway include the fact that we restrict enrolments to six students per tutor, as well as that if you have some prior skills, we can tailor the course accordingly.

As a student on this course, you will also get a tiling information pack that we have developed over the years, and which will be an invaluable reference for you long after you have left the course.

What can you learn about when you take on our five-day tiling training?

Our tiling intensive courses at YTA are renowned for their breadth and depth, and we can say exactly the same thing about our five-day intensive course.

Your experience with us will begin on the Monday with health and safety information, before you proceed to learn about the preparation of surfaces and the setting-out of kitchen tiling.

As the course goes on, you will get to grips with such processes as the cutting of tiles, grouting, polishing, silicone sealing, marking and cutting tiles around obstacles, battening out, full measuring and quoting, and much more.

Along the way, you will be instructed in how to use the various typical tiling tools. You will also discover assorted “tricks of the trade”, marketing techniques relevant to a tiling business, how to advertise such a business, insurance considerations, and so on.

Contact YTA now to find out more about our tiling intensive courses

You can find a fuller list of the content covered by this five-day course on the relevant page of the YTA website. If you would like to arrange a visit to our training centre prior to booking, or to ask any other questions before you commit, please feel free to get in touch with us.

With our help, you could be entering 2026 having made one of the best decisions you have ever made for your career as a skilled tradesperson in the UK!

Five Trades in Demand for 2025 (and How YTA Can Help You Master Them)

The UK construction industry is facing a critical skills shortage, with experts highlighting an ageing workforce, a lack of training opportunities, and rising demand for skilled tradespeople. The UK’s Construction Industry is Desperate for Skilled Workers – Here’s Why It Matters

The UK is facing a critical skills shortage in the construction industry. According to a BBC report, tens of thousands of new recruits are needed to meet ambitious housing targets, with demand surging for skilled tradespeople in areas like carpentry, plumbing, tiling, plastering, and kitchen fitting. This shortfall is not just a challenge—it’s a huge opportunity for anyone eager to build a rewarding career in the trades.

If you’re considering a career change or looking to gain practical, high-value skills, there’s never been a better time to enter the industry. YTA Training is at the forefront of helping career changers and aspiring tradespeople seize this moment through comprehensive, hands-on accredited courses.

Why is the demand for skilled tradespeople so high?

The government’s pledge to deliver 1.5 million new homes in England by 2029 underscores the need for construction workers, with an estimated 30,000 recruits required for every 10,000 new houses. Yet, the Home Builders Federation (HBF) reveals that recruitment constraints, such as an ageing workforce, the end of free movement post-Brexit, and a lack of sufficient training opportunities, have left a significant talent gap.

Here’s how this impacts demand among key trades:

  • 20,000 bricklayers urgently required
  • 8,000 carpenters needed, with high demand for joinery
  • 2,400 new plumbers
  • 1,200 professional tilers
  • 3,200 plasterers for essential finishing work
  • 20,000 groundworkers to prepare development sites

This growing demand translates into competitive pay, with experienced bricklayers earning upwards of £45,000 annually, carpenters around £38,000, and electricians close to £44,000. Entering the industry now doesn’t just provide stable work—it offers financial security and long-term growth opportunities.

Why Now Is the Best Time to Join the Trades

The skills shortage referenced in the BBC article highlights a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enter a trade where demand far outstrips supply. For decades, there has been a focus on promoting academic pathways over vocational ones, leaving a critical gap in skilled labour. This makes now the perfect time to upskill and take advantage of a booming market.

Whether you’ve always wanted to work with your hands, dreamt of becoming self-employed, or simply aspire to make a tangible difference in your day-to-day work, a trade skill is one of the most fulfilling paths to take. YTA Training ensures that you not only gain the knowledge and experience but also the confidence to thrive in your new career.
