Bricklaying

6th March 2020 By Liz Spider

How a seasoned bricklayer can earn a crucial qualification in just one day with us

With highly experienced and qualified bricklayers able to command salaries of as much as £35,000 a year, it should be no great surprise to any informed observer that bricklaying courses – like those provided by our own trusted construction training centre here at YTA – remain in considerable demand.

However, if you are an experienced bricklayer but not a sufficiently qualified one to be able to attain the blue skilled worker CSCS card as an on-site bricklayer, what are your options for obtaining a suitable qualification in double-quick time?

There’s no need to worry, when you take advantage of the EWPA route

What do we mean when we use the acronym ‘EWPA’? We are, of course, referring to the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment, which is specifically designed to give a worker with at least five years behind them in a given trade, the opportunity to earn a relevant NVQ Level 2 qualification.

Unlike other bricklaying courses that we offer here at YTA, this route doesn’t necessitate you spending a week or even two weeks at our training centre. Instead, everything could be complete within a day, and the process is an easy enough one to understand.

This is a true fast-track NVQ assessment route, giving you the chance to demonstrate your skills and knowledge to an assessor through a combination of professional discussion, witness statements and the practical assessment.

If you do successfully complete the EWPA – and you will be informed at the end of the day whether this is the case – you will then be sent your certificate within 14 days, or even in as little as seven days. This, in turn, will enable you to apply for your blue skilled worker CSCS card, so that you can swiftly get on site.

Don’t wait any longer to upgrade your employability

Assessments at our centre can normally be booked and completed within two weeks of you getting in touch with us – so don’t hesitate and risk missing out on the opportunity to get back on site, earning a wage and progressing your career as a seasoned bricklayer.

Indeed, we can even help you to get back on site before you have got round to completing the NVQ; all that you have to do is pay your deposit, so that we can get you registered and send you a confirmation of this by email. Then, you’ll be able to apply for and gain a six-month temporary card that will give you the time required to undertake the EWPA.

For more information about this advantageous and convenient training route, and to learn more about what makes us one of the premier sources of bricklaying courses in the UK, simply phone the YTA team now on 01274 682199, or send us an email.

Obtain your bricklaying Level 2 NVQ diploma in just one day via the EWPA route

Have you already spent five years or more as a bricklayer, but would like to upgrade your qualifications? If so, our bricklaying NVQ Level 2 courses here at YTA may be of great interest to you – or to be more specific, the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) option that enables you to acquire a diploma in your trade through practical assessment.

What do we mean by “practical assessment”? Well, the process is all about having your existing skills evaluated through professional discussion, witness statements and, of course, having your capabilities practically assessed by an NVQ assessor.

If you are judged to be of the right standard, you will then be sent your certificate, which you will be able to use to apply for the blue skilled worker CSCS card enabling you to get on-site as a bricklayer.

What units will you need to complete as part of this course?

There are five mandatory units that constitute the bricklaying NVQ Level 2 course, covering such subjects as conforming to general workplace safety, conforming to efficient work practices, moving and handling resources, erecting masonry structures, and setting out masonry structures.

You will also, however, be expected to complete an additional optional unit, of which there is a wide range to choose from. The unit that you select here may relate to erecting masonry cladding, placing and finishing non-specialist concrete, installing drainage or any of the variety of other specialities in bricklaying.

A thorough assessment process to ensure your suitability

There are various elements of the process of obtaining this diploma, including witness testimonies, practical assessment, professional discussion and direct questioning. It’s all designed to ascertain whether you possess sufficient ability and experience to place you alongside anyone else undertaking and passing bricklaying NVQ Level 2 courses.

If, at the end of your day with us at our NVQ assessment centre, you are judged to have achieved the certificate, well done! Remember that it could be less than two weeks between you making your first contact with us and your assessment being completed, so you could be back on site, earning a wage with your blue card, sooner than you think.

Call the YTA team, then, on 01274 682199, to learn more about place availability and to make your booking for an EWPA on a day of the week to suit you – as well as, of course, to ask any questions that you may have about this course route before committing.

On the bricklaying course you will learn trowel skills and build a half brick wall and a block wall. Advanced bricklaying techniques such as arches and practice on a range of different brickwork bonds such as garden wall bonds are also covered. The plastering course will cover boarding up of walls and ceilings, skimming over existing plaster and also onto plaster board. You wall also plasterboard onto block work wall using board fix ‘dot and dab’ plus backing plaster method. We will also repair holes in walls and learn how to patch repair plasterwork and feather in large areas.

The plumbing course briefly covers plumbing in bathrooms, kitchens and radiators systems as well as fault finding and repair from toilet cisterns to central heating.

The tiling course starts off with you tiling a basic kitchen, then around a window half height with trims to be mitred. Then moving onto tiling a bathrooms shower area above a bath and then tiling a floor with obstacles such as a pedestal to cut tiles around along with a boxing in and doorway architraves.

All our courses are taught by experienced and qualified ex tradesmen with only low students numbers per teacher ratio. YTA is based in Bradford, West Yorkshire and is easily accessible from the M62 motorway. If you would like to book a course you can either call the centre, visit the centre or book using the online booking system at the bottom of your chosen course page.
